VEKA recycling starts 2017 with new efficient truck fleet

With environmental care, quality and efficiency always being at the top of VEKA Recycling’s priority list, they begin 2017 with a new fleet of fuel efficient Volvo FH4 and MAN TGL 1 0.08 trucks.

Shane Lloyd, VEKA Recyclings Transport Coordinator, said: “The vehicles are vital to the service we provide our customers, and who depend on our reliable and regular collections and deliveries.

“Better fuel economy, reliable engineering, and a great cab for our drivers keep our vehicle fleet meeting the highest standards - and they look great too!”

“Linked to new Hireco 4.5m load strain XL trailers, with rear steer axles and de-mountable Manitou forklifts, our Volvo fleet helps us provide exceptional efficiency and customer service.

“The new livery, chosen by MD Tony Cattini, really stands out on the road,” added Commercial Director Simon Scholes. “We are very proud that for the first time we have a VEKA Compounds truck on the road, to help deliver our quality finished pellet and pulver to a busy extrusion market.”

VEKA Recycling Ltd has become the largest PVC-U window recycler in the UK by some margin. Growth in its Kent based pellet and pulver production has added to the success of the VEKA Recycling Group, Europe’s largest PVC-U window recycler.

SUEZ awarded Devon County Council household recycling centre contract

SUEZ recycling and recovery UK has been awarded a contract by Devon County Council to operate its Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) across the county for the next five years.

The contract, which is due to start on April 1 2017, covers the operation of 18 HWRCs and two waste transfer stations for an initial period of five years, with an option to extend year-on-year for four years.

SUEZ bid for the contract as the incumbent service provider, having operated the HWRCs across Devon for the past five years – achieving an exceptional recycling and re-use performance.

Devon County Council and SUEZ will share equally in revenue generated from the

The Wood Recyclers’ Association is urging DEFRA to increase targets for the recycling of wood packaging as part of its revisions for the UK’s packaging recycling business targets.

In response to DEFRA’s consultation, which sought views on new packaging recycling and recovery business targets for 2018-20 for a number of material streams, the WRA highlighted the fact that

sale of resale materials, and SUEZ aims to achieve an average waste-diversion target of at least 81 per cent over the duration of the contract. Revenue raised by the sale of resale materials will help support the Council’s cost of running the service.

Under the new contract, SUEZ will retain the same level of staffing as it previously employed (approximately 130 staff) and make an investment in new mobile plant and other minor site improvement works.

James Pike, Regional Director for SUEZ recycling and recovery UK said: “We have enjoyed a really positive relationship with Devon County Council over the past five years, and we are naturally very pleased to be able to continue this relationship.

the generation of wood PRNs (packaging recovery notes) in the UK is significantly higher than the current recycling target of 22%. The outcome of this is that a large proportion of wood PRNs therefore go towards general recycling targets.

Furthermore, the Association stated a number of wood reprocessors are no longer operating under the PRN scheme because the prices are so low, so their

“We have worked in collaboration with Devon County Council, to continually improve the customer experience, by educating staff in respect of best practice principals around recycling and how to convey this information to residents.

“We have also introduced on-site re-use facilities for the benefit of residents, and will look to strengthen this offering under the new contract.”

Councillor Roger Croad, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “This is a very significant contract for the County Council and, by renewing Suez’s contract, we have secured the best solution, with a focus on price, quality and value for money.”

WRA ask DEFRA to make improvements in recycling strategy

wood packaging recycling is not be officially recorded via the formal database.

Julia Turner, the Executive Director of WRA, said: “Increasing targets would increase the overall wood packaging recycling and would mean a higher proportion of existing wood PRNS would go towards the increased material specific target, rather than towards general recycling.”
