SPOTLIGHT ON RDF/SDF AND SRF
RDF challenges can be overcome with planning
Whilst the European ‘mass burn’ market does undoubtedly have an important role to play in managing the UK’s residual waste, the production of low grade RDF does also have its’ challenges.
The shift in the exchange rate following the UK’s decision to leave the EU has signifi cantly increased the majority of gate fees and logistics costs, which are generally paid in Euros.
In addition, we have also seen an increase in local commercial waste volumes across northern Europe and Scandinavia, which has reduced the capacity available for imported material.
Longer term fi ve year plus contracts are the key to the oversubscribed marketplace
The result of the oversubscribed market is to realise any real value, you will need to enter into longer term (5 years +) contracts.
Businesses that are serious about realising the potential of the European alternative fuels markets need to consider how they can develop a processing capability that provides fl exibility in terms of the fuel they produce.
The ability to produce higher quality fuel, which is designed to meet a certain specifi cation, takes you out of the congested ‘mass burn’ Energy form Waste (EfW) market and opens up a much broader range of applications and facilities.
These include energy intensive manufacturing industries such as the paper and pulp, or cement markets. It also provides access to alternative technologies, such as fl uidised bed installations.
Manufacturing a fuel to a certain specifi cation, and using it to off set the use of traditional fossil fuels, also means there is less exposure to turbulent price fl uctuations - as the product is viewed more as a fuel, than a waste.
Crucially these markets also off er the fl exibility for shorter term contracts, which gives the opportunity to ‘play the market ‘and place the fuel where our clients will get best value.
We recognise there is a lot for businesses to consider when looking to tap the potential of the fuels export market. The majority of waste managers are (quite rightly) focused on providing a service to their customers.
Totus partners with businesses to provide a full service that extends well beyond sourcing off take options from our
Louis Calders, Totus Environmental
European and global network. This service includes advising on the best onsite processing, the provision of all logistics and administration (including the Trans-Frontier Shipment of Waste (TFS) requirements), and accurate reporting so customers have full visibility of their fuel through to its’ fi nal destination.
This ultimately provides access to the European export market without detracting from the time and attention needed to operate your business effi ciently and eff ectively.
The export market for alternative fuels can help businesses both reduce costs, and further improve their environmental performance. Totus Environmental’s Commercial Director LOUIS CALDERS, discusses the opportunity for UK waste managers, and off ers some practical advice for businesses looking to realise the potential of the export market.
