SUEZ and TerraCycle join forces in Europe to develop innovative recycling solutions
SUEZ has partnered with TerraCycle and acquired 30% of their activities in Europe to develop innovative collection and recycling programmes in Belgium, Finland, France, the Netherlands, the UK and Sweden.
This partnership brings together TerraCycle’s collection programmes, which focus on community engagement, and SUEZ’s expertise in waste recycling and recovery. It will offer individuals, businesses and local authorities new solutions for recycling waste that was previously not recyclable, in order to transform it into new secondary resources. TerraCycle is an internationally recognised
company that develops selective collection systems for the recycling of more than 100 specific hard-to-recycle waste streams (disposable items, flexible packaging, office supplies, beauty products, oral care, used coffee capsules and cigarette butts) currently not handled by traditional recycling channels. Active in 20 countries, TerraCycle partners with mass market companies, brands and
local authorities to implement recycling programmes tailored to these post- consumer products and their packaging. Through this partnership, SUEZ is
expanding its’ range of services in Europe with innovative voluntary collection methods and additional recycling channels for all their customers, particularly for products that need complex packaging. All the waste collected will be reused or recycled into new products. Jean-Marc Boursier, SUEZ Deputy CEO for

Almost half of bin waste in Birmingham
is food related Almost half of all waste placed in the city’s household wheelie bins is food – that’s the shock finding from new research carried out by Birmingham City Council.
A two-week survey of a sample of bins revealed 48 per cent of waste within ‘residual’ (household/black lid) bins was food. The findings are being used as the catalyst for the second
phase of the council’s Zero Hero campaign, launched in September 2016 as part of the effort to ensure the city sends no waste to landfill by 2031. Cllr Lisa Trickett, Cabinet Member for Clean Streets,
Recycling and Environment, said: “I was shocked when I heard the results of our survey – Birmingham really is home to a food mountain that doesn’t need to exist. “It has certainly made me think twice about what I put into
my bin, as there is no reason to throw perfectly good food into our bins and there are certainly other options like composting for peelings and scraps. “There are a wide range of campaigns and initiatives such
as ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ that look to tackle this issue. It has been previously reported the average household throws out £700 in food per year, but I am sure these new figure will act as a wake-up call to all Brummies. “Through our Zero Heroes campaign we will be doing all
we can to educate and engage so citizens and business can consider how they can minimise their own food waste.”

Evolve Polymers Ltd assets are
purchased by American giant Plastipak Packaging Inc, a leading global manufacturer of rigid plastic packaging as well as virgin and recycled plastic resin, has completed the acquisition of the assets of Lincolnshire based Evolve Polymers Ltd.
Plastipak’s global recycling operations currently recycle billions of bottles per year, and the Hemswell Business Park site has the capacity to process an additional 6-9 billion PET bottles into food-grade, and other high quality material. The business will begin operating immediately under Plastipak’s ownership
while contracts with Evolve’s existing key business partners have been secured for continued effect. “Evolve’s prior owners invested significant resources to build the Hemswell Cliff
site starting in 2006, and the business’s performance benefited from continuous improvements,” said Martin Hargreaves, Managing Director, Plastipak Europe. “We currently operate plastic recycling operations in the U.S. through our Clean
Tech subsidiary and in France and Luxembourg for our European customers. This acquisition complements our existing recycling businesses, and amplifies our ability to bring our world-class technologies and know-how to better serve our UK and European-based customers.” Frank Pollock, President of Plastipak’s International Operations and Chief
Commercial Officer, stated: “We are excited to begin collaborating further with the management and associates formerly employed by Evolve, to provide more eco-friendly plastic packaging to consumers. “We have been a pioneer in the plastic recycling industry, and recycling is one of
