2017: THE EXPERTS’ VIEWS

Back the campaign to amend laws on tachographs and drivers’ hours to tackle driver shortages

I think the year will be slow to start, due to the uncertainties still surrounding the details of how we will exit the EU. But once confidence is back, I foresee things picking up.

One of my hopes for the New Year is that the numerous new infrastructure projects in the pipeline choose their contractors due to their compliance and safety record, rather than on price (as we see far too often). I also hope Sadiq Khan recognises the

logistics industry is key to his success as Mayor of London – his housing and cycling infrastructure promises, in particular, rely on construction logistics and the Mayor needs to see that and acknowledge it. For the industry, it will

be important to get the backing of our campaign to amend the laws on tachographs and drivers’ hours, so

that we can make real headway in tackling driver shortages. These rules, although of

paramount importance for long haul and international journeys, place an unnecessary restriction on local short distance hauliers, who are essentially working a 7 to 5 job. It would go a long way towards helping air

quality, traffic and incidents at peak times, as we could advise drivers to take their breaks and thus reduce the number of vehicles on the road at peak times. I am also hopeful all the great work we

have been doing over the past six years with the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) and Construction Logistics & Community Safety (CLOCS) will be pushed down to the sub-contractor level, to improve the level of safety and to ensure a levelling of the playing field.

Kiverco Ltd: Looking ahead to the future with huge expectations for another great year

We have had our best year to date at Kiverco and having completed several important milestone projects, our expectations are high for 2017. Whilst there is still a lot of uncertainty around the effects of Brexit, the reduction in the value of the pound will make us even more competitive in the export markets.

Regardless of Brexit it hasn’t affected any relationships with our dealers around the world, and they

John Lines, Sales and Marketing Director, Kiverco Ltd

remain positive, with plenty of enquiries and projects coming through. The changes in the exchange rate are getting harder to predict, so in 2017 we will have to ensure we are able to react quickly to this. It seems recent declines

globally in the value of recycled commodities has had the effect of persuading more operators to look at the production of materials for the waste to energy sector. It would be

good, for the UK economy, to see more of

this material being utilised here, rather than being sent to other countries with better developed WtE segments. With the introduction of the brand new

Kiverco Compact range this month, we are excited to see the interest this will generate throughout our target markets. We believe this new range of products will revolutionise the way many operators process their waste, and offer them affordable ways to increase throughput and recycling efficiency. All in all, we are very excited and positive

about what 2017 has in store for us. There is a lot of uncertainty around, but what we do know for certain is Kiverco will continue to produce solid and robust plant and maintain good customer service levels.

2017: Great news ahead for all our advertisers

I joined the Skip Hire magazine team in October, and was immediately struck by the friendliness of our clients and colleagues in the industry.

As an advertising representative it is my job to get out and about, and I am really looking forward to 2017 and having the opportunity to get to know more and more of you and put names to faces. I can’t wait until WASTE’17 at Old

Trafford, Manchester in June, where I will be looking forward to attending my very first trade Skip Hire Magazine exhibition. It

promises to be the biggest and best yet, and I will be personally unveiling our plans during the early months of the year when I am out and about. This year, I will also be making a trip to

Ireland to meet advertisers and new clients, and intend to make this an annual trip to emphasise the growing strength of the sector in the Emerald isle. In September, the annual RWM event

takes place in Birmingham, and the experience of attending the 2016 version was both enjoyable and profitable – albeit a little daunting as the new kid on the block!

presence next year, and I look forward to welcoming you all to our stand for a drink (or three), and a chat. Summing up 2017, I can GUARANTEE I will

bring new opportunities to our advertisers with some exciting additions to the magazine, to help them to bring even more impact to their advertising mix.
