generation and will go down as a bull that could have been used more heavily.
One female family member to capture the breeding spotlight has been Bertaiola Bolton Lidia, Mincio’s full sister exported from Italy to Holland. She has several notable daughters and granddaughters in demand as bull dams for their combination of outcross and high genomic test numbers. One cross in particularly high demand has been the cross with the Dutch sire Snowman.
PROOF: Breed leading udder scores are the highlight of Mincio’s type proof, with much of the information
derived from his 129 Italian daughters, good enough for 80% reliability. Even after the type base change, Mincio still boasts three point udder support and fore attachment numbers and also scores strongly for legs and feet. Otherwise the rest of the type pattern shows no major faults, with moderate stature and a near ideal rump angle. Production data is more modest, with a nonetheless useful plus 343kg for milk and flat component percentages. The modest production and health trait results have constrained his PLI to a moderate £176. As a bonus and in contrast to his sire Bolton he is not a carrier of the genetic
recessive condition Brachyspina.
COGENT SIRE: Dairy Specialist Andrew Holliday says of Mincio: “When I first saw the Mincio
daughters I was impressed; the daughters were in a variety of farming systems, but were all milking well
above their contemporaries and were extremely quiet to be around. They had great type, but the nice thing is that they were not too tall.
They had great balance, with ample chest width. The best part was the quality of the mammary systems as they had fantastic texture with incredible definition of seam. Rear udders were impressive, with phenomenal height and width for young cows. Locomotion was another feature, which was aided by a wide thurl setting, a trait that is often overlooked, but is important for cows to last a long time.”
Mincio is Marketed by Cogent in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
SUMMARY:
Outbreeding potential is undoubtedly a major attraction in considering the use of Mincio in the UK, given his lack of relation to most of the major bloodlines currently dominating worldwide Holstein breeding. Although Picston Shottle’s sire Mtoto does appear in Mincio’s pedigree, breeding Mincio to a Shottle daughter or grandaughter would only constitute a low inbreeding risk. Mincio is, therefore, relatively safe to use in combination with the bloodline of the British icon and in particular he seems to be a complimentary cross for the Oman bloodline.
For those seeking to introduce or maintain excellent udders and overall type in their herd, Mincio, therefore, represents an easy to use bull without major fault.
