must have a good udder and natural milking ability,” explains Brian. The herd comprises of 54 Excellents and 75 Very Goods, including 24 VG heifers. On three occasions the herd has reached the Northern Area section of the Premier Herd Award, winning in 2011 and 2013. And the herd has also won the Yorkshire herds competition on numerous occasions. Brian also enjoyed showing in the past and hopes to get back in to showing in the future.





“Finding time to show isn’t always easy. However, it is something I’d like to do again as I think it is the best way to publicise the herd and genetics. In 40 years of breeding the Holstein cow has never been better and I don’t see any reason for that improvement not to continue.” Families that are regularly delivering include the Sarah’s, a strong family of functional type cows that repeatedly breed heifers transmitting good components. “The Stephanie, Scilla, Dewdrop, Kitty and Rilla lines have all developed good families with several generations of top classifi cations,” he adds.


One of the original families that was saved in the nucleus and is coming to the fore as well as being the highest PLI family in the herd is the Freedom family, reckons Brian. “This family goes back to Whinhill Freedom. The Winifred line is another original family that breeds good strong, functional cows. While the Miss America family has developed in to one of my favourites with consistent cows that suit our system, this line goes back to a Warden cow that was purchased at the Joylan Sale. “One family I have wanted to develop since attending the Roybrook Sale
