CLUBS ONLINE STAFFORDSHIRE

The Club is delighted to have won the interbreed quiz with the team of chairman Janet Law, joint secretaries Maureen and Chris How and their daughter and son-in-law Alison and Garth Leese who had just returned from a year in Austrailia. The team was joint first following all the rounds and faced a tie-breaker and emerged the proud winners of a cup and some bottles of Australian wine. Thank you to the Derbyshire Ayrshire Club for organising a successful evening.

The committee took the bold step to change the venue to Branston Golf and Country Club for this year’s dinner dance which was held in March. All 169 members and guests included a fabulous night with excellent food and the dance floor full to the very end. Tom Hill (picuted right) was presented with a Club Award by Holstein UK president Randolph Miller in recognition of him winning the President’s Medal.

Following the formalities of the AGM at the end of March members were entertained by Chris ‘Sid’ Parker from Scarsdale Vets. He gave a funny and interesting talk, with illustrated slides, about how working in a vet practice has changed over the last 30 years. In April Staffordshire Club held a show and sale at Leek Market for the third year in conjunction with Bagshaw’s monthly pedigree sale. Sponsors for the show were Bateman’s and Alltech UK, Andrew Birkle from Whinchat judged the show and awarded the championship to Overseal Wanda 290 from J E and E M Marshall who went on to sell for £2220. While the reserve, Bentygrange Elvina Candy from G M, M E and R H Phillips stood reserve and sold for £2210.

BORDER AND LAKELAND

Border and Lakeland Holstein Club had a presentation evening for the silage competition and Winter Holstein Classic herd competition alongside their AGM. John Bushby, Whangs Farm, Egremont, took over from Marion Holliday as president, while Sue Armstrong was proposed as vice president and Neil Brough, Buckabank Farm, Dalston, was elected as chairman.

Stephen Brough thanked Harrison and Hetherington for their continued support of the Club sales as well as sale sponsors Paragon Vet Group, Cogent Breeding, Coomara Vet Practice and Zoetis. The highest price female in 2014 was Annandale Hambone Rhapsody from Matthew Armour that sold for 3900gns. While David Brewster from Boclair gained the most points in the pre-sale shows in 2014.

Holstein UK president Randolph Miller was welcomed at the meeting and kindly closed the formal part of the evening before the competition results were announced.

The silage competition winners were announced and the Club is grateful of the sponsorship from Genus Breeding for this competition. Ben Yates travelled up from Shropshire to give his reasons for the Winter Herd Competition which was kindly sponsored by Dodd and Co accountants.

Ben commented: “I was extremely impressed by the standard of entries and the time and effort taken by members to prepare their animals in what were rather adverse weather conditions. The competition was extremely tough with the quality of animals on show, all of the entries were a real credit to the breed and the Club.”

104 THE JOURNAL JUNE 2015 DERBYSHIRE

The first event of the year on the Derbyshire calendar was a talk by Eric Easom from Broomhouse on the development of the anaerobic digester on his farm at Alfreton. It was an enlightening talk about the challenges and ultimate achievement of the project which had been ongoing for several years. In late March the Club held it’s AGM with Eric Easom elected to the chairman’s post, with Andrew Bunting from Alsopdale proposed as vice-chairman. Harrison Mellor from the Braemarhouse herd is a new member to the committee next year. The evening also included a talk by Richard Pilkington of Aintree Holsteins. In a slick and very interesting presentation he talked about several developments, adaptions and changes that have taken place, including the move to zero grazing and A2A2 milk. He also spoke about several of the premier cow families in the herd including the Friesian purchases.

The Winter Herd Competition was judged by Janet Law from the Overseal herd. Entries were strong and the results are listed below.
