Riverdane Holsteins swept up in the section championships at the Western Holstein Club’s Spring Show


he Western Holstein Club’s Spring Show attracted a crowd of enthusiasts to view a quality show of cattle and with more than 50 entries judge Elwyn Thomas had a number of strong classes to deliberate over. Dominating the evening’s section championships was Mark and Sue Nutsford’s Riverdane string from Northwich, with the couple going on to take the grand championship with Riverdane Talented Rose EX92. This fifth calver by Talent was on her first outing two months fresh and giving 60kg. Her dam is the EX90 Riverdane Mtoto Rose with her granddam being Hyclass Jolt Rose EX91 who was nominated All Britain and her next dam being the All Britain Hyclass Black Rose VG88.

Describing his champion Elwyn said: “My champion is the kind of cow we strive as breeders to breed, one that suits cubicles and for a fifth calver carries her udder well above her hock and handles her legs well. I gave her the advantage tonight for having a better side view, higher udder and for the way she tracked.” Standing reserve senior and grand champion was Woodhey Bolton Jennifer, an EX93 third calver from Paul, Ruth and Mark Robinson. Calved in October and still giving 55kg she was well shown last year and went one better than her honourable men- tion result at the Spring Show 2014. Her maternal sister by Gold-

fish stood second in the senior class earlier in the show.


Best udder in the senior section was awarded to the second prize second calver Styche Loader Sally from Seaton Farms. This ninth generation VG or EX Loader daugh- ter is classified VG87 and gave 11,952kg at 3.19%bf and 3.15%p, she is out of a VG88 scored Damion sired dam.


In the heifer championship it was a win for Martin Beeston leading Riverdane Holsteins’ November 2012-born Goldsun daughter Riverdane Golden Sheri.


“The champion heifer was a nice balanced heifer with no holes,” explained Elwyn. “She also had the advantage for being stronger through the crops.”


Coming through as the winner of the junior two year old class this VG87 scored October heifer stood fifth at UK Dairy Expo. She is backed by seven generations of consecutive Excellent scored dams including the All Cana-
