appy New Year, I am sure we will all be glad to see the back of 2015, with everyone having their fair share of rain and flooding across the country. As if the ongoing struggle of milk price wasn’t enough to contend with, farms across the country have had buildings and fields flooded, with hedges and fences washed away.

The outlook certainly doesn’t look a whole lot brighter for 2016 on the milk price front and many herds are being lost as a result. In this issue Holstein UK announce changes it has made in a bid to help members during these difficult times.

Since the last issue there were strong shows of Holsteins at AgriScot and the Royal Ulster Winter Fair with the mature classes particularly strong, once again proving Holsteins offer longevity. The breed took the interbreed title at AgriScot and swept the board in the interbreed championships in all sections at the Royal Ulster Winter Fair.

other benefits with biomass and anaerobic digesters. Features on herds which are benefitting from different types of green energy are Broadmeadows, Ballinaskeagh and Logan. Derbyshire Club’s feature looks at two long established herds, the Bunting family’s Alsopledale herd and the Flower family’s Havendale herd. Elite Holstein genetics were much in demand at the Black and White Sale in December and special individuals have still been making a premium at sales throughout the country. However, in general trade is starting to reflect the difficulties created by the continually low milk price.

Among many industry articles there is one from Marco Winters on the new TB index which is aimed at breeding dairy cows with better resistance to TB.

Looking forward to the year ahead there is the World Congress in March, Holstein UK’s Celebration and AGM in June, closely followed by the European Champion Show in Colmar and then the third UK Dairy Day in September.
