WESTERN O

Yacht Britannia before checking in to our central Edinburgh hotel.

n 5th November the Western Club held its 64th

Annual Wexham Cup Bull Show and Sale at Beeston. This year, in addition to the traditional Wexham Cup, there was a newly-designed award, the Western Genomic Award, which reflected the increasing use of genomics within our industry. Of more contemporary design, this glass award incorporates a 3-dimensional helix to represent the genomic qualification. This year’s Wexham Cup winner, for the overall champion bull, was The Downing Partnership’s Wintersell Millisto, while the new Western Genomic Award went to Cottonabbotts Holsteins for Cottonabbotts Whitehouse.

Later in November 40 members and friends of the Club travelled to Edinburgh on our Agriscot Study Tour. On the outward journey we also took the opportunity to visit the Royal

Hotel, Walshford, a packed room of members were entertained by guest speaker Meurig James and herd judge Matthew Isles.

The next morning the coach took us, through the rain, to Agriscot 2015 – a totally covered event, for which we were grateful. It was a great opportunity to catch up with many familiar faces and to look around the halls and admire the animals exhibited.

That night, on our return to Edinburgh, we took in the Musical “Mack and Mabel” starring Michael Ball and the following day (when it had thankfully stopped raining) we stopped for a coffee break at a café overlooking Holy Island on our way home via the first day of the Harrogate Christmas Fair. A busy trip, but always good to have a chance to spend time away together. We finished the year on 8th December with mulled wine, mulled apple juice and mince pies on offer to all-comers at the final Focus Sale of the year at Beeston.
