Outside Roxy the first cow really putting the herd on the map. “Since we first had success with Logan Outside Roxy as a heifer in 2005 we have been lucky to have numerous good cows that have given us a lot of enjoyment, but also advertised the herd.

“Other herd favourites over recent years include Logan Modest Lulu EX95-4E, Logan Mr Sam Gail EX94-3E, Kellywell Marshall Brooke EX94-2E and Logan Mr Sam Hope EX93. They are all individuals that have accumulated wins at the Royal Highland and Dumfries shows, as well as All

Britain awards. Most recently Logan Sid Edie VG89 is a second calver that has been greatly admired and has been nominated for an All Britain Award. “We have also had

unprecedented success with Dilandy Debonair Tabitha Red EX92, an impressive cow that took interbreed champion at AgriScot and the Royal Highland Show. The purchase of Tabitha was thanks to Bryan Challenor who saw the potential in her and created the opportunity to purchase her with the Lawrie family,” says Michael. “Tabitha is also generating

income through sales with four embryos sold at the Black and White Sale 2014 for 500gns each and her Apples Armani daughter making 8000gns at the Black and White Sale 2015. She is due again in February with her fourth calf.”

Further income is generated through the sale of surplus heifers, both privately and at the Border and Lakeland Club Sales at Carlisle and the Yates family are aware that to have a business that is able to compete in the current climate they have to be receptive to change.

Cows are milked three times a day through the 20:40 GEA parlour and average 11,000 litres milk sold at 3.97%bf and 3.14%p.

The biomass boiler also provides a great drying room which is great for drying calf jackets.

A milk shuttle is used to provide calves with exact volumes at a consistent temperature.

The Yates family and previous runner up in the Farmers Weekly Dairy Farmer of the Year and Gold Cup and finalists in the Scottish Dairy Farmer of the Year.
