By the time you read this, all three theme parks will be up and running at Dubai Parks and Resorts (DPR), the ambitious development in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that is home to Legoland Dubai, Motiongate movie park and Bollywood Parks Dubai. Originally all three were due to debut on October 31, but a staggered launch saw them open in phases between November and January, when Legoland Water Park joined the line-up. As we went to press, confirmation arrived that

the Middle East’s first Legoland Hotel will eventually join the offering at DPR, complementing the Polynesian-themed Lapita Hotel which opened as an integral part of the resort back in November. Expected to open in late 2019, Six Flags Dubai will be the destination’s fourth theme park and the region’s first Six Flags branded park. In this issue we take a look at a handful of

attractions already featured at Motiongate Dubai (see page 26), but we plan to update you on some of the other exciting new experiences awaiting visitors to the UAE over the coming months. Or why not schedule a visit to the DEAL trade show next month in Dubai (see page 28) and check them out for yourself? Also in this issue we survey a type of attraction

that looks like becoming a 21st Century industry classic: the flying theatre. When Soarin’ Over California launched at Disney’s California Adventure in 2001, it paved the way for a new breed of media-based attractions. At the time, the cost and complexity of Soarin’ made it unfeasible to anyone else, but advances in both ride and projection technology have opened up the market significantly. Turn to page 30 to find out why flying theatres

have become one of the industry’s hottest products. Or perhaps you’d like to listen to Michael Mack at Europa-Park in Germany, which launches Europe’s largest project of its kind this spring: “A flying theatre is one of the best attractions in the world,” he declares on page 36. Who are we to argue?
