Park Update

Growth planned for Waldameer Park

In his final article for Park World, late North American editor, Paul Ruben caught up with Paul Nelson, owner of Waldameer Park, Erie to find out more about his future plans for the Park.

“M

y 10-year plan to expand the park by 25%,” he said. “We’ll have to do new major slides

holding up to 24 people, all by ProSlide. We’ll add an action park with a two or three story go-kart track, major coaster, family coaster, several mini golf courses, and a food outlet which will also handle all catering by the park because we handle over 5,000 catered meals in the park every week.”

New Ralley Racer

“We have a very nice operation here for a city of our size (300,000),” he offered. “We’re adjacent to Presque Isle State Park which has over four million visitors per year.

“New in 2021 include installation of Carousel Delights,” he continued. We removed our old

shooting gallery because we no longer use cash in the park. We now have a refreshment area to enjoy food you purchase in the Merry-Go-Round building. We put a new Dodgem metal grated ceiling with digital lights above to brighten the building.”

“Our offices have been remodeled,” he noted. “The size of our counting room has been reduced by one-half because 85% of our money now comes over the Internet. We now use a thumb print for checking in and out for payroll, It also tells our employees when to check in and out. It’s a much- improved way to control our payroll.” “We’ve added a Six Lane Rally Racer, the largest slide in the park, which is new for most of our outdoor customers,” he added. “It’s from ProSlide, the first ever made like this. We’ve also added a new Whirlwind, an SPF/Visa Spinning

Coaster brokered by Rides-4-U. I’ve ridden the coaster myself and it was a lot more fun and exciting than I expected.

Tenth Oldest Park

Nelson was asked what the highlight of the season has been so far.

Our best season ever was 2019, followed by 2020, our worst season. It was a complete disaster as a result of the pandemic and decisions made by Pennsyvania’s governor.. Our 2021 season will also be poor because of decisions made by our governor.

The introduction of Ravine Flyer II in 2008 was a very prudent gamble by Nelson. With the demise of nearby Geauga Lake, Erieview Park, and the apparent weakining of Conneaut Lake Park, many of those parks’ guests will now visit
