SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE

Healthy a/c means healthy people

People are increasingly investing in air conditioning as an improvement to both home and workplace to control the environments where they spend the majority of their time. James Lalley, air conditioning ancillary product manager at Smith Brothers Stores explains why maintenance is critical to the well-being of both systems and people.

A

ir conditioning is increasing in popularity primarily because running costs can be low, but many may not have their air conditioning routinely serviced and

maintained.

Neglecting to carry out regular service and maintenance causes a decline in the way the air conditioning performs and increases energy use by running less efficiently. A lack of regular servicing can also lead to expensive repairs in much the same way as a car or bike can develop faults if it has not been regularly serviced.

Another important reason for an air conditioning system to be serviced and maintained routinely is to keep the warranty valid. It is normal for a supplier or manufacturer’s warranty to stipulate that the air conditioning systems are only covered if they are routinely serviced and maintained.

What can we do?

It is important to advise the customer of the implications of not scheduling regular service and maintenance for their systems. This can be easier said than done as people often think that avoiding the recurring cost of fees can seem like a financial saving – especially when they do not understand the need for it.

Financially, there are two ways the customer could look at this – they can either outlay a small amount on a regular basis for the systems service and maintain the warranty validity for its duration, or they can choose to pay for a potentially large repair as and when the system generates a fault.

Customers that decide against a regular maintenance contract would almost certainly end up with an air conditioning system fault simply because the system will not have been cleaned. They may not have any problems initially, but as time goes on faults could become unavoidable and very costly.

In addition, every product suffers deterioration over time – a four-year-old air conditioning system would not have the same efficiency as one that is brand new – but by taking care of the system and all of its components you can minimise its extent.

Maintenance is the only way to retain the efficiency of an air conditioning system, and with energy bills increasing it is more important than ever to cut down on excess power consumption. Air conditioning systems tend to consume more power as they get older and suffer wear and tear, especially that which is unchecked by regular servicing. There
