required by the combustible propane (or propylene) refrigerant are restricted to the externally installed system, which is situated behind the test hall. The HC compressors used are optimised for the challenges presented by hydrocarbons, so the compressors fully meet expectations for a long service life. For hydrocarbon applications, an oil sump heater and special oil filling are used in the compressor. In addition, the electronic compressor protector is housed in the separate switch cabinet. “The compressors themselves and the Futron chillers are already approved and released for hydrocarbon operation,” adds the product manager.

The fill quantity of propane for the whole system is only two times 2.1 kg. If a gas escape occurred, this would be detected by gas sensors. Any leak would cause a safety shutdown, and a ventilation system would discharge the combustible gas from the machine housing. To minimise any possible explosion risk, a separate switch cabinet is installed for these safety systems. The risk assessment for the system, together with the installation, were conducted jointly by GEA Bock and Futron. “Since the system contains

core components which were already approved and suitable for propane, this was relatively easy,” recalls Mr Fröschle.

The two brine chillers with the six-cylinder compressors have been in operation since the spring of 2018 and have been working without a hitch: there have been no breakdowns, and they are not noticeable acoustically, since their location behind the test hall is far removed from the offices. It is also striking how satisfied colleagues within the company now are with the air-conditioning system. They can control the desired temperature, which is produced by the wall-mounted fan convectors, for the room individually and, since the new chillers have been put into operation, they no longer fear any loss of system capacity. “Even in the long and very hot summer of 2018, during which we measured temperatures up to 38 degrees in the shade, there were no complaints,” says Manuel Fröschle. The air-conditioning system, which is designed for both efficiency and sustainability, also increases the efficiency of the company staff, since heat stress, which reduces productivity on hot summer days, is now a thing of the past.

Mr Fröschle is also satisfied with the result of the stress test on the new HG66e HC for hydrocarbons. “The prototype proved itself outstandingly in the record-hot summer and met our expectations in full.” Now in full production, the HC version of the HG66e is also officially in the product range. He can also dispel any fears that, by changing to hydrocarbons, customers must reckon with high service costs. “Any qualified person who knows how to deal with combustible refrigerants should be able to perform operational and service work. Most of the work is actually possible without even opening the system to any significant degree.” He also adds that time-consuming leak checks, such as those required for most systems with synthetic refrigerants, are not required for natural refrigerants, such as hydrocarbons. This means that the natural refrigerants propane and propylene can be used for air- conditionin g systems and industrial purposes just as well as CO2 and ammonia, for example, which are generally used in cooling and deep- freeze applications.
