GREEN GUIDE PART ONE

across a number of products. The Nocria Z series range of wall mounted air conditioners have shown a 28% reduction in kg-CO2 during the product life cycle in comparison to 2009 models, resulting in a Reddot design award in 2019, along with the M and KP series. This award considers deign, functionality, durability, ecology, quality and ergonomics.

Green and Super Green products Every product has to meet a score of 80 points when assessed throughout the Environmental Management Assessment. This classifies the product as a ‘Green Product’. ‘Super Green’ products are certified as being one of the industry’s top environmental performers, achieving commendation by third parties or reducing environmental impact by 15% or more in comparison to conventional models. In 2018, 23 new models were certified as Super Green Products.

The volume of the heat exchanger present

in the revolutionary Airstage JIII-L horizontal discharge heat pump VRF outdoor unit, boasts a 50kW capacity from a ‘Mini VRF’ chassis. This has not only resulted in a 47% reduction in chassis volume, making it lighter and more compact than the comparable Maxi VRF, but has reduced the relative refrigerant quantity by 50%, equating to 24.6 tonnes of CO2

equivalent.

Fujitsu will continue to contribute to a sustainable society by developing products with improved energy-saving performance. During design and after completion, each air conditioning product is tested in a chamber in which the environmental conditions can be changed to simulate both indoor and outdoor at various conditions for both temperature and humidity. The existing mechanical plant that was used to generate these conditions has been replaced with efficient air conditioning systems to reduce energy consumption. Coupled with reduced pre and post test operating times, during preparation periods, annual CO2

emissions

have been reduced by 24% from 2015 to 4,890 tonnes-CO2

. Alongside these key changes to

manufacturing and product development, Fujitsu is undertaking a wide range of initiatives and activities in line with the Fujitsu General Way Corporate Philosophy and the current stage of its Environmental Action Plan, which came into effect last year and runs until 2022. Among the measures

are the reduction of business trips. Fujitsu General Group is working on the reduction of the number of business trips and reduction of environmental burden by utilising IT. In 2018, Office365 was introduced across domestic and overseas bases. By switching from various head office conferences to web conferences, energy consumption along with the number of business trips and movement of people has been reduced. In domestic sales and service departments, by using video conferencing for meetings between the head office and branch offices, training sessions for sales and service staff and contact with teleworking sales staff, travel has been reduced and communication improved. The recent restrictions in travel due to Covid-19 means that this remote way of

working may prove to be the new normal post lock down facilitating the action plan. The group is working on the improvement

of transportation efficiency by reducing long distance delivery by road worldwide. It was found that long distance delivery by truck was carried out from the west coast warehouse to the east coast business partners in across continents. This has been changed to marine transportation from the production bases to the relevant coasts. As a result, long distance truck delivery was reduced by about 120 containers equivalent to 40ft in 2018 compared to 2016. Furthermore, Fujitsu is actively working on direct container shipment to major customers’ warehouses, accounting for 40% of sales in North America.
