Delivering the UK’s
ambitious carbon reduction target will require a transformation in how we heat homes and businesses. Heat pumps are set to take centre stage in this low carbon revolution, says Andy Legg of Toshiba Carrier UK.
T
he UK was the fi rst major economy to introduce a mandatory national target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050. With heating currently responsible for one third of emissions, achieving this target will require a complete transformation of both technology and national infrastructure.
The government has acknowledged it will “require virtually all heating in buildings to be decarbonised, and heat in industry to be reduced close to zero carbon.”* There is no single magic bullet that can achieve this. The answer is likely to come from a combination of existing and emerging low carbon technologies. Heat pumps, however, have a huge thermodynamic advantage in this race, due to their ability to harvest low grade heat from the environment and industrial processes, and upgrade it into a useful form to heat and cool homes and businesses. While the most effi cient forms of traditional heating only approach Coeffi cients of Performance (COPs) of less than one,
