From the editor A green future

I

t seems that big business is keen to tackle climate change, with over 200 well-known companies calling on the government to prioritise the environement when planning the nation’s recovery from the Covid-19 crisis.

Which makes sense. It’s not exactly starting with a blank piece of paper, but it’s as near as we could ever get to such a thing. Incorporating environmental sustainability measures into new investments, support schemes, and directives now should help build a green economy and put us back on track to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 – or better.

But sustainability is a complex word which is comprised of social and economic concerns, not just environmental, which means that environmental measures have to be incorporated in a considered way – not just all or nothing. Building a green economy is certainly a necessity, but like the environment, it has to be sustainable. Our industry has made enormous strides already with more planned of course, but there could be an even greater push for environmental innovation across the board as we climb out of the Covid-19 hole. Hopefully though, it will be tempered by common sense and we can use the opportunity to make a new greener future.
