From the editor Investment in

people T

his issue of ACR News is focused on training, an area that has thrown up much debate, controversy and assertions that the

governmen t, colleges or someone else should do something about it. Training, along with marketing, is the first thing to be cut when times get tough and then we all complain about how there’s a skills or knowledge shortage. We’re all guilty of it – making decisions to get us through the ‘now’ and then bemoaning the fact that no one’s done enough for the future. The thing is, training can take place in many forms and while there is always a cost, that cost may not be what you think it is. There are great training courses out there for core expertise and legislative requirements of course, and then there are the well-discussed apprenticeships, and less discussed ‘returning to work’ and ‘re-skilling’ activities but there is also mentoring which can be external or intern al, one-on -one or as a group (see Cool Mentoring and Women in RACHP p44-55).

Employers worry that they will lose out by investing in training and then seeing their investment walk out to the competitor over the road. They should perhaps ask themselves why they’re leaving. Mazlow’s hierarchy of needs suggests that it’s not all about money, and although basic needs must be met first, it has become too common that employers are locked into believing only money matters.

The bottom line is that investing in people now paves the way the future an d that there are many ways to make that investment.
