Combating counterfeiting I
n 2015, more than 20 million counterfeit pills and other medications were confiscated in
one covert operation, according to Interpol. It’s a problem that will continue to plague pharmaceutical companies, and other industries, because criminals can make a lot of money by falsifying drugs that are in high demand, in short supply, or are exorbitantly expensive for consumers. In the United States, the Federal Drug Supply
Chain Security Act (DSCSA) will require that pharmaceutical products be marked with a national drug code, serial number, lot number and expiration date in machine- and human-
readable formats. Application of these codes on all prescription pharma products must be implemented by November this year, and the pharma industry has adopted serialisation as the technology to accomplish this. To help businesses combat counterfeiting
and address these new requirements, AT Information Products (ATIP), a provider of package coding printers, and Covectra, one of the leaders in serialisation-based solutions for track and trace, have joined forces on a multi- layered brand-protection solution. The ATIP-Covectra serialisation solution
enables authentication, track and trace, diversion detection, returns/recall management, and brand enhancement. It also meets the requirements of the US DSCSA for the pharmaceutical industry, and the growing number of industries now adopting serialisation, including food/beverage, tobacco and automotive manufacturing. This technology is flexible and
easy to configure, is quick to install and commission, and delivers a low cost of ownership. It was also developed by engineers with many years of serialisation, packaging, printing, and vision systems experience. ATIP-Covectra has many
benefits, including: • Integrated solution: It is one of the only serialisation providers
Continued commitment to coding solutions
The ability of Linx Printing Technologies to provide cost-effective coding and marking solutions across a wide variety of applications will be demonstrated at the upcoming Interpack exhibition in Düsseldorf, Germany, in May. The full range of Linx laser coding solutions will be on display including
the newly launched Linx CSL10 and CSL30. These new coders have opened up the benefits of laser to more companies and applications. Key benefits are even faster printing speeds over previous models and greater versatility - making the coders ideal for a wider variety of products - along with quicker and easier installation and set-up. The recently launched Linx 8900 series and Linx 10 have both further
extended the capabilities of CIJ printing. The 8900 has been designed to provide ease of use and help maximise eficiencies during production. A number of new features have now been introduced. These include the
Advanced System Monitoring, which provides a continual check of the printer’s operation in terms of ink system running parameters and environmental conditions to maximise eficiencies. The new Production Schedule enables the printer to print a sequence of different messages automatically, for example in dairy applications where the printhead is traversing across multiple lanes of products. User Defined Date Formats deliver even greater coding flexibility by allowing users to create their own customised date and time formats.

with a Level 5 cloud database integrated with the packaging line. • Flexibility: It can handle a wide variety of
packaging configurations that exist within a customer’s operation. • Printing expertise: It offers reliable, high-
resolution, and cost-effective inkjet printing. • Rapid implementation: The solution is
quick to validate and easy to operate. ATIP’s line of Autoprint coders leverage HP’s
thermal inkjet technology to deliver quality print for customer applications. This is particularly helpful for the printing of 2D/DataMatrix barcodes and alpha-numeric characters as required by the pharma industry. Autoprint controllers are also multi-layered, password-protected and easily validated. Autoprint products commonly used for
serialisation include the X1Jet and iJet coders, along with the X2Jet controller and twin pens. For applications where space requirements are tight, the X1Jet Stitch offers a slim design with controller and print head all-in-one. Coders are easily integrated with existing packaging machinery, and are a critical component to the overall ATIP-Covectra integrated serialisation solution. In addition to coding equipment, the ATIP-
Covectra solution includes clean green water-based inks for standard porous cartons and a growing line of industrial inks for more difficult surfaces. Self-contained print cartridges jet solvent-based inks in order to adhere to a variety of non-porous packaging surfaces. From foils to paper-based substrates, hard plastic, glossy boxes and more, Autoprint inks can print on virtually any surface where serialisation is required.

Linx’s thermal transfer, thermal inkjet and case coder ranges will also be
shown. The Linx IJ375 case coder is able to cut costs while maximising line uptime and print quality for the coding of secondary packaging. For coding onto packaging such as boxes, trays and sleeves, the Linx
TJ725 thermal inkjet printer incorporates Simply Smart Technology to offer a high-resolution digital coding solution. Linx’s Active Cartridge Care System saves money and cuts waste by slowing the nozzle drying process, making first prints more reliable every time.
