elpro has been designing precision machinery for the
of applications, substrates and coatings and, depending on the coat weight and application, direct, reverse and offset gravure coaters, plus a multi-gravure version, are available. Advanced performance features include extreme coating accuracy and ease and speed of operation for roll changes, change of coating width and change of coating mix.
The Mayer Rod & Air Knife
coater offers a simple, undemanding method of applying a range of low to medium viscosity, aqueous- and solvent-based coatings to a variety of film and paper substrates. However, when the requirement is for very heavy and level coating of medium to high viscosity onto uneven
surfaces, such as textiles, fibreglass mats and nonwovens, the coater of choice is the Knife over Roll coater. Typical applications for this
model include pre-impregnated composite fibres, embossed and plain flooring materials, reinforced plastics and medical dressings. Delpro’s high-precision laminator,
suitable for substrates such as paper, film, foil and fabrics, comprises a precision steel roll with rubber covered nip roller. Nip pressure is independently adjustable, via precision gap adjusters or pneumatic cylinder pressure, with the pressure level being indicated on each side. Auto control of all functions is also available. Pre-heating or cooling the steel laminating roll controls web entry and exit as well as laminating temperature. These systems can be retrofitted
to existing machinery or supplied as part of a complete new machine. Delpro aims to work in partnership with customers from concept, through analysis and design, to supply, installation, commissioning and a full after-sales service.

Strengthening development opportunities for packaging inks
S
iegwerk, one of the leading providers of printing inks for flexible packaging, recently added a Nordmeccanica Labo Combi 400 laminator
to its Technical Centre for the business unit flexible packaging. The new machine adds laminating capabilities to the existing testing skills at the European ‘Centre of Competence’ and therefore supports the targeted development of packaging inks under industrial or customer-realistic conditions. Siegwerk is one of the first printing ink manufacturers to operate its own laminator for product development and testing purposes. This will enable the company to offer packaging print providers even better solutions tailored to their specific requirements. “Internal resources for testing
lamination processes and the influence of printing inks on the performance of laminates is highly important for us,” says Hanns Martin Kaiser, head of technology flexible packaging EMEA at Siegwerk. “It helps to enhance our ink solutions specifically for packaging print providers and to further reinforce our technology leadership. “The new equipment enables us to
conduct considerably more extensive ink development tests internally prior to starting the qualification process at customers’ facilities. This leads to better ink performance and saves both our customers’ time and machine capacities.” At the same time the opportunity to simulate lamination processes under

industrial or customer-realistic conditions enhances the company’s problem- solving skills. Any lamination problems occurring at the customer’s premises in connection with the ink can therefore be better understood and solved. With the purchase of Nordmeccanica’s Labo Combi 400, Siegwerk has
invested in an industry standard for technical centre-scale tests. At a web width of 400mm the equipment operates at a maximum speed of 250 metres per minute and can handle solvent-free, solvent-based as well as water-based adhesive systems on all standard substrates. The machine features two corona treatment units and also meets all other European market requirements. Many co-suppliers, like manufacturers of adhesives or films, as well as some converters, also use the same laminator to conduct their own tests. This makes parameter comparisons easier and end results are reproducible and transferable. Siegwerk is now even better able to share application-related information, coordinate customer-specific solutions with other suppliers and therefore add forward-looking innovations to its portfolio of ink solutions.
