Stand up pouches and lids are key for convenience F

lexible packaging manufacturer, Clondalkin Flexible Packaging,

is tapping into the growing demand for high barrier film packaging as consumers increasingly seek products that offer convenience and high quality. A new report from Smithers Pira,

‘The Future of High-barrier Packaging Films to 2021’, forecasts steady growth for the high-barrier films market at 4.7 per cent CAGR. The growth in high-barrier films will see total world value climb from $9.00 billion in 2016, to reach $11.32 billion in 2021. Roy McAdoo, chief commercial

oficer for Clondalkin Flexible Packaging, talks exclusively to Converter about how the company is responding to this growth. “One area of our high-barrier

flexible packaging portfolio which has seen significant growth in recent years is our retort packaging solutions, which includes stand up pouches and lidding for plastic cups and trays. “Consumer demand for ready-to-

eat or partially cooked convenience food packaging is growing. Retort packaging allows the sterile packaging of a wide variety of food products and is used to ensure a long product shelf life. Its high barrier properties and ability to withstand high temperatures means it’s ideal for microwave cooking, which continues to grow in popularity with time-poor consumers and the subsequent demand for convenience products. It also offers consumer friendly features; for example, all our pouches can be optionally manufactured with a resealable system, such as a zipper or velcro

strip, or a spout and screw closure for paste or liquid. “Brand owners are opting for

stand up pouches because we can help them differentiate their products with different functionalities and creatively shaped pouches. Retort packaging also offers a sustainable, cost effective alternative to rigid pack formats, such as metal tins and glass jars, which sits well with the large retail chains where the emphasis is very much on cost control and shelf life extension. “All of our retort capabilities and

expertise comes from our facility in Grootegast in the Netherlands, and we now have a dedicated commercial team which is working in the UK on bringing this expertise to the UK market.” McAdoo explains that new

advancements in CPP film technologies (the sealant layer for the majority of our retort stand up pouches and lidding) are working towards simplifying the overall retort pouch design, generating processing eficiencies, positively contributing to source reduction initiatives, and lowering the overall package cost. Clondalkin has in- house CPP extrusion capabilities to be in control of the entire manufacturing process. “On the lidding side of things we

saw some really positive results last year,” McAdoo continues. “We were awarded the Del Monte Supplier Award for our 'excellent performance as rated on quality, delivery and competitive advantage' and one of our clients won an award at the SIAL Innovations Awards in Paris.” www.clondalkingroup.com
