Creating cartons for the consumer: Fresh thinking in pharmaceutical packaging
the packaging, but also the marketing materials as well. Rondo-Pak, with the help of the group of companies it is a part of, has the ability to match customers’ brand colours, but also to meet all the falsified medications directives and FDA regulations in multiple locations across the world. “Our capabilities and the
systems and precision machinery in the tobacco, paper and machine tools industries. Rondo-Pak in the USA, alongside its sister
R
subsidiary Rondo obaly, in the Czech Republic, manufactures folding cartons and paperboard packaging components, offering partitions, displays, dispensers and trays, amongst other things, with various packaging capabilities and features, including clinical trial packaging, child resistant and senior friendly packaging, serialisation, anti-counterfeiting and braille. The recently-opened USA headquarters in New Jersey offers brand new state-of-the-art equipment. Speaking exclusively to Converter, Victor Dixon,
Rondo-Pak’s president and chief operating oficer, says that packaging protects the product throughout the supply chain and it communicates to users along the way. The company’s aim is to bring these two elements together by supplying

appropriate packaging for clinical trials all the way to when something is commercialised and available over the counter. We have to be able to design, innovate and develop products to meet the needs of each of these phases throughout the product lifecycle, and our packaging team concentrates on three key areas of our packaging development programme.” Integrated: “We have built an integrated
network across the different footprints of the pharmaceutical sector in North America and Europe, but also globally too,” Dixon says. “We integrate with our sister companies and their packaging equipment departments to ensure our materials run exceptionally well on packaging lines, and we have engineers to monitor the work.” Innovation: Rondo-Pak can help with the
creativity of a clinical trial, providing a fully assembled carton but also the automated packaging line and all the extras, such as the outer and inner carton, partitions, sleeves and vials. If the customer only requires a small amount of cartons for its trials, Rondo-Pak can provide these ready for the drug to be inserted, then closed/sealed and sent out for trial. The company has an expert design
team that is always coming up with packaging designs with interesting opening features, high shelf appeal and that are tamper evident. Invested: Dixon continues: “Across
2016 alone, we invested $30 million in our North American business with new plants and facilities, new
resources and new people. Even more was invested in Europe. We are one of the few companies in this space that is focusing on investment to grow and migrate to support the needs of this ever- evolving market. It is certainly a lot different now compared to five or 10 years ago. We are
fully invested in our customer success; we listen to what they want and the products we supply are the communication vehicle that allows patients to properly use their medications time after time.”
www.convertermag.co.uk February 2017 25 Rondo-Pak has a wide range of packaging
products and systems suitable for customers in various corners of the pharma and medical market. The company’s core offering is its fully assembled market-ready cartons, which incorporates its Dividella machinery line. Dixon says that this is a more cost-effective solution for Rondo-Pak’s customers compared to hand assembly and manually inserting carton partitions and other parts. As well as this, the company’s facilities act as a back-up for when machines go down at customer sites – either due to scheduled maintenance or an unexpected breakdown – to keep production moving.
IT’S ALL IN THE DETAIL Elsewhere, security solutions from Rondo-Pak include an array of tamper evident packaging features, anti-counterfeiting and authentication techniques with a series of covert features, from chemical tags, special digital water marks, invisible features, microprint and micro threads. While some of the company’s tamper evident
features are designed to be noticeable, others are more intricate. Examples include its mechanical die cutting process that cuts triangular tabs onto the closing flaps on a package so they tear away when the box is opened and expose a contrasting colour underneath, so the consumer knows the box has previously been opened. Multi-spot gluing is also available, as well as waver seals, glued thumb notches, overwraps and brandable labels that, when opened, reveal a message, such as ‘this has been opened’.
HELPING TO PREVENT WASTAGE “The cost of drugs continues to go up and there’s a lot of breakage and loss in the supply chain because of the use of glass vials or syringes,” says Dixon. “We have designed a product called Safepack [below], a one-piece die-cut box that rolls up on itself and forms a six-side protection inside a typical carton, so that if the box is dropped or bumped there’s crush resistance. “Rondo-Pak is always innovating in these
areas, taking a customer’s packaging and making suggestions as to what features we can build into it in a cost-effective way.”
