Pushing the performance of UV LED arrays
(ITL) will be extended with the XT8 boost technology as standard. The newly developed UV LED Booster XT8 delivers an increase in UV power of up to 30 per cent, while maintaining a higher efficiency since there is less input power required to run the LED chips. ITL is now rolling out the technology in all LED UV systems and it is hoped that this will take them to market-leading levels of performance. With XT8 UV LED Booster

technology, the system reaches a high output and dose that greatly increases cure speeds, offering customers a wider choice in all applications. An extended service life is achieved since the semi- conductor chips are not being

driven as hard when compared to other products on the market. The 30 per cent boost in efficiency is available for systems fitted with 365, 385, 395 or 405nm or for systems with mixed wavelength arrays, which ITL first introduced in 2010. Arrays containing the XT8 UV
LED Booster carry a warranty of five years on each LED module and can be retro-fitted into most existing models of ITL products, offering customers the chance to upgrade performance without totally changing the system. ITL designs all UV LED packages
in-house and the company’s chief technical officer, Jason Smith, explains: “XT8 reflects the cutting edge in semi-conductor packaging combining the latest Nano and phase-change materials, which when combined
with the most advanced chip technology, offers a package of an exceptionally high efficiency. “We are achieving an increase in
UV output more than 50 per cent greater than one year ago, without any increase to the electrical input current to the chips, which in turn
has reduced the cooling requirements of high intensity products, enabling us to produce the highest output LED systems currently in the market place.” Founded in 2000, ITL is a
designer and developer of UV curing solutions for inkjet printing as well as other emerging technologies. Part of the IST METZ Group, ITL and IST offer a large portfolio of UV curing systems. IST METZ develops, manufactures and distributes UV equipment for curing solvent-free inks, varnishes, silicones and adhesives.

New cold foil adhesive for LED UV offset printing P
rinting ink manufacturer Zeller+Gmelin has added to its range of products new adhesive systems for the finishing process by
means of cold foil transfer on sheet fed and web offset printing presses. The LED U0850 and LED U0851 adhesives from the Uvalux series are both designed for the product sector of LED UV technology. The company has specialised in the market segment of radiation curing and has developed inks and varnishes for this application for many years, and it now also offers LED UV curing adhesives.
The two new products are an important complement to the wide range
offered by the printing ink supplier for the adhesive sector. Altogether, the Uvalux series is a complete programme that provides the appropriate product, including low-migration variants, for various applications in UV offset and letterpress printing on narrow-web printing presses as well as in UV sheet-fed offset printing. In addition, the entire programme includes the two series Euralux and Uvaflex, with which Zeller+Gmelin also serves the segments of conventional sheet-fed offset printing as well as UV flexographic printing. Thanks to the two new products, also users of the LED UV technology are
able in combination with UV offset printing to realise metal effects on paper and cardboard both in packaging printing (non-food) and commercial printing. For the curing of the highly reactive cold foil adhesives, LED UV systems in the wavelength ranges of 385 and 395nm can be used. In processing, the adhesives safeguard a good adhesion to the film and the substrate. They feature a sharp edge definition in printing and are very stable in the ink duct, even with high-volume print runs. The difference between the two systems is the colouring, which supports an exact positioning and easier control of the applied quantity. Uvalux LED U0850 is a yellow-coloured adhesive intended for the use on gold foils and Uvalux LED U0851 is a grey-coloured system for silver foils. Currently, LED UV systems are increasingly moving into the market as an
alternative to conventional UV curing. They offer a number of economic and environmental benefits. These include, among others, low energy consumption and a long service life as well as the elimination of warm-up time and waiting time when the lamps are switched on or off. The systems do not contain any mercury, do not release any ozone and, due to the lack of infrared radiation, they are also suitable for temperature-sensitive substrates since the influence of heat on the substrate is reduced.
