Double success for Metsä Board at iF Design Awards
side of Metsä Board’s fresh fibre paperboard. The company was also recognised for its
Elevated drink box (EDB) design, which provides an easy and convenient way for consumers to enjoy beverages. The box can be placed anywhere and does not take up additional shelf space in store as the elevated base is inside the packaging, ready for assembly by the consumer before use. When empty, the plastic bag is easily removed from the box, helping with material separation for recycling.
Metsä Board achieved a double success at this year’s iF Design Awards. T2 Mini Fruit Tea packaging won a certificate for ‘Beverages’ and the company’s own Elevated drink box won a certificate for ‘Independent Packaging’. Cyril Drouet, design and innovation director at
Metsä Board, stated: “We are delighted with this level of recognition. iF Awards reflect our primary aim of helping customers enhance brand value by delivering sustainable, safe and innovative paperboard based packaging solutions.” The designs of the T2 Mini Fruit Tea
packaging reflect the new flavours in the T2 range, with each flavour packed in a particular fruit shaped box: banana bake, watermelon sorbet, Turkish apple and peach. These boxes also have an unusual and eye-catching opening mechanism. The design is printed on the reverse

Achieving ‘zero waste to landfill’ with UPM Raflatac’s RafCycle
Oriflame Products Poland, has joined UPM Raflatac’s RafCycle recycling program. RafCycle recycles and
reuses pressure sensitive label waste to create new materials. The partnership supports Oriflame’s target to reduce its landfill waste to zero across all its manufacturing sites. “As part of our overall strategy for the period
up to 2020, we’ve implemented a ‘zero waste to landfill’ program across all our factories. The method for waste disposal outlined in the RafCycle program fits in well with this strategy and will bring us closer to our goal,” said Anna Niedzwiecka, senior supply chain manager, Oriflame Products Poland. Partnership in the RafCycle program delivers a
range of benefits. The Oriflame Products Poland factory has reduced its waste management costs by 18 per cent. The company also earns the right to use the ‘RafCycle Partner’ logo in its marketing.
Better links with Government needed to improve recycling
The Packaging Society has stated that forging better links with the Government is crucial to address the problem of packaging waste. The Government recently launched a petition
to ban all non-recyclable/non-compostable packaging in the UK, and the Packaging Society has highlighted the importance of fundamental changes to current recycling and waste handling legislation, to eradicate confusion. It has called for

a uniform approach towards recycling collections and waste bin rules to educate the public and lead to a long-term change in behaviour. Chris Waterhouse, chair of The Packaging
Society, said: “Packaging waste is often created by inappropriate disposal by the public. Consistency of approach would educate centres of excellence to be developed to lead to greater capabilities with regards to packaging waste handling.”
