Meeting key market drivers A

ppealing to consumers remains a key driver for many brand managers. In order to differentiate their products in an increasingly competitive market, crystal clarity can be a

strong feature whilst the ability to print with different printing systems, such as flexo and gravure, allows for a wealth of design possibilities. Also, an aging population has led to pack designs and packaging formats to be reviewed to make them easier to open. Innovia Films (Innovia) has continued its focus on delivering products

that give brand managers the features they require to make their products succeed with the launch of some new products. RayoForm ICU is a new crystal clear in-mould label film that is produced

using its bubble process. The exceptional clarity of RayoForm ICU is unprecedented in the industry, making it the clear leader to showcase brands and their products. Richard Southward, global product manager, labels, at Innovia, explains:

“There is a continued trend towards clear containers. Brand managers favour them because they allow consumers to see the nature, quality and

colour of their products before purchase. Clear containers also allow brands to enhance their on-pack branding and offer greater shelf impact.”

RayoForm ICU has been specifically developed to maximise brand

impact by the use of clear containers. It also maximises printing and moulding performance and eficiencies. Print trials have shown ICU can readily exceed industry standards for sheets per hour. The films’ balanced mechanical properties offer potential SKU reduction as sheets can be sheet- fed in multiple directions. For the moulder, RayoForm ICU offers increased productivity through faster label handling, enhanced container shape retention and more eficient stacking. Southward continues: “RayoForm ICU is currently available in thickness of

58 micron/230 gauge. We are already seeing a lot of interest in this new product and are happy to provide trial reels to prove its performance.” Innovia has also introduced some new films that satisfy other market

drivers by expanding its portfolio of peelable BOPP films. Propafilm RCP is now available in 52 and 60 microns and the easy-to-open food packaging film range now includes heavy duty, high barrier and snap wrap options. Amaia Cowan, Innovia’s market development manager, packaging, adds:

“Brand owners are waking up to the fact that easy-open is increasingly becoming a major purchase consideration for consumers, especially those with reduced dexterity. We have listened to consumers who often complain about the dificulty of getting into conventional packaging. Our easy-to- open packaging range makes their life that little bit easier. Rest assured, these films continue to protect the products they wrap while providing an enhanced product experience. “We have developed a range of BOPP filmic overwrap solutions, ideally

suited to applications where multiple product packs are collated and shipped to retailers, who then split the collation pack down to display the individual packs.” It is essential that the outer film does not stick to the inner film, so that it

can be removed without damaging the inner unit pack. Two solutions are available. Acrylic coated film, which does not seal to

coextruded films, or use the new coextruded films, which offer a low seal threshold, avoiding heat-sealing to the inner packs. These materials can allow for lightweighting by replacing traditional carton outer packaging. Exceptional pack appearance is assured with high visibility of the unit packs inside. uwww.innoviafilms.com

Manchester-based manufacturer of thermoformed blister packaging has invested

markets for blister packaging products. Its range of patented tamper proof blister packs are supplied to product manufacturers worldwide. The purchase of this new rigid film extrusion

line is an example of Mister Blister’s commitment to invest in the latest machinery in order to provide its customers with top quality products. The company’s managing director, Gary Briscoe,

says: “I carried out in-depth research before selecting the Bandera line. People within the industry, whose opinions I value, all recommended the Italian manufacturer. I was further convinced by the fact that there are already 12 lines operating within UK manufacturing and an established support network. This is particularly important in a project of this magnitude. From my first meeting with Bandera I have been impressed by their flexibility and eagerness to ensure Mister Blister get the line and outputs we require. It is clear that they see themselves as long-term partners of our brand and will support us totally.

30 April 2017 “We will be working on an average output in

the region of 660 kg/hr and expect to produce 2,000 tonnes of material per annum. The majority of this material will be for our own production, but we will be selling small orders of several popular widths and microns of sheet from stock.” Steve Trainor, of UK Extrusion, gets down to the

technical details of the range: “The Bandera PET Rigid Film lines for thermoformed packaging offer maximum flexibility by processing all packaging raw materials. We find them robust and well engineered; they provide Single Screw Extruders

and/or HVTSE co-rotating Twin Screw Extruders (no requirement for drying of raw materials) with the option of the inclusion of mineral fillers. “Packaging manufacturers can select single or

multi-manifold flat extrusion die (auto or manual) with internal deckling systems. They are also able to specify from a wide range of winding systems, with varying degrees of automation. I totally agree with Gary, Bandera is so refreshing in its flexible attitude towards supporting customers and ensuring it gets the machinery best suited to their needs.” uwww.luigibandera.com
