electronica 2016 – 13 exhibition halls packed with all that’s new from the

global electronics industry Once again, electronica will provide the global electronics industry with a platform in Munich for the world’s largest event to showcase practically every aspect of electronics technology. Like all previous shows, electronica 2016 will offer the chance to see the major players from key industry sectors including semiconductors, embedded, test and measurement, power, interconnection, services, distribution etc

A

ccording to Angela Marten, electronica’s

exhibition director, electronica 2016 will see around 2800 exhibitors showcasing their products and services to what she expects will be an international

audience of over 70,000 visitors during the four days beginning November 8th.

"Due to a very strong demand, we have added an extra hall to allow us to include new exhibitors and to give exhibitors an opportunity to increase the size of their stands,” said Angela Marten. “Electronics is now an essential part of our lives and, in November, electronica exhibitors will be showing us what will drive our society forward in the years to come. Visitors to electronica 2016 can keep right up to date with all the latest trends and developments across every sector of our exciting industry,” she added. To help visitors find their way around a 13 hall event, the exhibition halls at electronica are devoted to specific product sectors such as semiconductors, power supplies, test and measurement, E-Mech and so on. The hall plan on page 4 and 5 provides full details. As well as the exhibition itself, electronica 2016 will offer a programme of conferences and supporting events designed to give visitors the chance to learn more about developments in key subjects including automotive, embedded solutions, LED technology, Internet of Things, cyber security, healthcare and wearables. electronica’s Embedded Platforms Conference will focus on topics that include hardware platforms and hardware components for embedded systems, software and tools for embedded development and optimisation, and standards and legal provisions for embedded systems. The conference takes place on November 9 and 10.

Day one will focus on “IoT and Security” and

“Microcontrollers and Peripherals”. In a presentation titled “A Holistic Approach for Securing Embedded Devices”, Andre Schmitz

(Green Hills Software) will use recent examples to show what a secure software architecture can look like. For the Embedded Control sector, Keith Curtis (Microchip Technology) will present the latest alternative to DSPs and analogue solutions in a presentation titled “Core Independent Peripherals Super-Charge 8-bit Microcontrollers”.

On day two, participants will discuss the “Power and Sensors” and “Embedded Communication” sectors. “Wireless charging: Cutting the last cord” is the topic of a presentation by John Leonhard (Nordic Semiconductor ASA). He will introduce various new ways to charge batteries for mobile devices such as smartphones and laptops wirelessly. Laurent Dardé (NXP Semiconductors Germany) will give a presentation titled “Combining the power of NFC and BLE” in which he introduces an exciting application for combining the two technologies - a new generation of hotel key- cards.

This year’s automotive conference starts the day before electronica itself on November 7. The programme suggests that the conference will discuss topics including smart lighting, autonomous driving and connected vehicles. Steve Nadig from Daimler Trucks North America will give a keynote address on ‘Autonomous Trucks: A Global Perspective’. In another keynote address titled ‘Automotive meets CE’, Dr Ludger Laufenberg (Kostal) will explain how autonomous driving is effecting interior electronics while Dr. Reinhard Ploss (Infineon Technologies) will examine the current role of electronics in the automotive industry in a keynote titled ‘Semiconductors as a key enabler for the transition of the automotive industry’. Another conference highlight is the concluding discussion on ‘The Secure Connected (Self- driving) Car’. The participants in this roundtable discussion will be Dirk Wollschläger (IBM), Lars Reger (NXP Semiconductors Germany), Dr. Thomas Wollinger (ESCRYPT) and Manfred Bauer (Flexera Software). Many exhibitors are expected to showcase their latest automotive developments. These include NXP who will be inviting visitors to take what they call a test drive into the future. In cooperation with Siemens, Honda and other

partners, the company will present technologies that prevent accidents, reduce traffic and CO2 emissions and make drivers’ lives easier. They are based on high resolution radar systems as well as compact, in car communication devices that communicate with intelligent traffic lights and signs in real time. Cyber security will also be a focus topic.

Renesas is sure to provide some excitement at its stand with the electric-drive Artega sports car, which incorporates a range of applications driven by the company’s versatile and scalable R- Car, RH850 and RL78 products. With Renesas’ infotainment demo, visitors will be able to view a display matrix using multiple displays and see how the application seamlessly moves between and across the monitors. They will also see how augmented reality can boost safety and convenience with an ADAS demo, which shows the 360 view around the car based on Renesas R-Car SoCs and features an overlay of mirror and driver monitoring. As you can see from the image, getting into

electronica can take a while so we suggest you pre-register which allows you to more or less walk straight in. You are asked to create a personal account by

providing some basic information. Once an account is opened, it is possible to purchase discounted entry tickets for a single day (Euro 27.50), two days (Euro 46.50) or for all four days (Euro 63.00). These are so-called “Print@Home” tickets which gives you entry to electronica 2016 without queuing.
