Day in the life Sticking to schedule

David O’Donnell runs the Anytime Fitness in Tooting, London. He describes a typical day…

Anytime Fitness has two types of franchisees: owner/managers who work hands-on in the club like David, and those who employ a manager and take a step back from the business.

8.30am

I start the day with a call to my club manager Matt, who typically does the early shift in the club. We discuss daily and monthly sales, and operational and retention Key Performance Indicators. We also deal with member queries and operational issues for the day ahead. Sales and marketing strategies form an important part of these conversations.

9.00am-11.00am I turn to my to-do list and email inbox. I’m frequently in touch with my maintenance teams and equipment providers about what areas in the club could do with a touch-up or what new piece of kit may add to the member experience. Of course, there are also the more mundane tasks to deal with, such as settling invoices and talking to various suppliers. However, one of the great things about

working as an Anytime Fitness franchisee is that the technology allows you to operate from anywhere in the world. You’ve got

your club management software, your CCTV remote login and, of course, your email on your smartphone, which enables you to stay on top of everything at your club at all times.

11.00am I’m currently in fi nal discussions for my second Anytime club in London and I spend some time completing tasks to ensure this is all on track. Today I have a phone call with my solicitor who is ensuring that the ‘legals’ are all in place as expected.

12.00pm Today I’ve got a meeting with the manager of a local gastropub – where we are planning to hold our fi rst member event of the summer in only a few weeks’ time. It’s great to be a part of the local community, and all the businesses in our part of town help each other out as much as they can. We’ve got tie-ups with many local shops and restaurants, which enables our members to have money off – whilst at the same time driving footfall to local businesses.

3.00pm-4.00pm I arrive at my club in Tooting around mid-afternoon on weekdays. I’ll do a club ‘walkaround’ and have a catch-up with my managers. We talk about operational queries and try to resolve any outstanding issues, which could include anything from personal trainers to the class timetable.

4.00pm-8.00pm

I tend to spend the busier weekdays helping out the team in the club by lending

a hand to deal with members on the gym fl oor or even doing a bit of cleaning myself – I like to lead by example!

Spending weekday evenings in the club is my favourite part of being a franchisee. You get to meet and interact with so many members on a daily basis and you really feel part of something special.

8.30pm

I head home now safe in the knowledge that it’s been another successful day at the club. I don’t usually have much admin to do at this point as I’ve been chipping away at the emails and messages throughout the day on my phone when I’ve had spare time.

I make sure I spend some quality time with my girlfriend. It’s important to keep the balance and my Anytime Fitness franchise allows me to do just that.
