Franchise Focus Make the change

Dennis Jenkins explains why he decided to leave his previous humdrum business and become a gas-elec franchisee

INVESTMENT LEVEL: £16,500 “I

t was continuous and relentless – although I worked 12 hours a day, week in week out, my work was never done. When I left the offi ce at 7pm on

a Friday I knew exactly what awaited me on Monday morning, and it was usually a problem.”

So said Dennis Jenkins about his former job as the joint owner of a mechanical and electrical (M&E) company. But, one day 12 years ago, he decided enough was enough and he walked away from a company, which had annual turnover of £2.5million. Luckily, his many years in the M&E industry meant he knew all about gas-elec, the nation’s premier gas and electrical safety inspection company which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary. Opening a franchise with them could, he thought, be a way back to his working roots. “My

fi rst ever job had been as an apprentice electrician and I’d loved it. Why? Because I could get with the actual core job and not have the stress of keeping other people in work or, indeed, have any other liabilities.” So, he took the plunge and has enjoyed every day of his working life since. In fact, in three years’ time he’ll be renewing his gas-elec franchise term for a third fi ve- year term.

“This is as much a sociable job as a technical one, and I love talking to people and hearing their life’s experiences.” And there’s also, of course, the satisfaction of knowing he’s doing an important job. “Sometimes I come across something really dangerous on a safety visit and it’s very gratifying to know I’ve diagnosed and solved the problem.” He also relishes not having to book any of these safety visits in his territory, which covers Reading, Berkshire and Wokingham. “My regional offi ce does all that – as well as fi nding the work in the fi rst place,” Dennis said.

As well as gas and electrical safety inspections, that work includes boiler installations and attendant remedial works, supplying and fi tting CO and smoke alarms, and carrying out legionella risk assessments and EPCs. “There’s more than enough work coming in and, unlike in my old job, I don’t spend 12 hours a day doing it!”
