Why did you choose a hands-on franchise?


It gave me the opportunity to work in all parts of my hands-on business. I felt that I wanted to know the roles that eventually would be filled by my employees – nobody knows the job like the workers! This helps me plan for all aspects of the business, as I can count on my previous experience.


What did you do before running your franchise?


I was involved in professional sport for 15 years.


Greensleeves Karl Temata


Karl has been the owner of Greensleeves Maidenhead for just over two years.


How long have you been running your franchise?


I have been running my Greensleeves business just over two years. It does feel like it has been a lot longer due to the amount that has happened in that time and what I have learnt.


What attracted you to franchising? I wanted to run my own business combined with the security of knowing that the franchise model I chose worked. The fact that I could also rely on the support of Greensleeves head office was very beneficial, especially in my first year.


How did you find the training for your new vocation?


I found the training very thorough from the beginning. There was an intensive course at the Greensleeves head office, held over 10 days, that focused on all elements of the business, from carrying out the treatments through to finance and administration.


In addition, I found the ongoing support


from the head office team extremely beneficial – nothing is too much trouble. I also had the experience of growing up on farms, and this has certainly helped me in this business.


Are you happy with the lifestyle that comes with running a Greensleeves franchise? Yes, I am – you get out what you put in. It is an extremely enjoyable and rewarding business to run. It’s been a great first year and I’m looking forward to all the others still to come.


How is business so far? The first few months were tough, especially as I was still getting used to the day-to-day activities and familiarising myself with the area. Now, I am a lot more confident about the future as the business has grown by 40 per cent in the first year alone.


Describe a typical day running your franchise. This role is constantly changing as my business becomes larger and new employees start. Currently, I do a lot of planning for the future cycles, as well as covering extra jobs and completing new quotes. I have grown the business enough that I now have three employees. This allows me time to further focus on business growth while they look after the day-to-day treatments and administration.


What do you like best about running your franchise? The excitement I get from seeing how far the business has come and planning how I can continue to grow it in the future.


What are your plans for the future? I plan to continue drawing on the experiences from my first two years to make the next one even more successful.


What is your one piece of advice to someone considering buying a franchise?


Spend time with the franchise – nothing beats experience. You need to be sure that it’s what you want to do, as ultimately the owner drives the business.
