A Framework for the Future of Senior Living: Memory Care
F
ollowing Argentum’s 2015 listening tour, the association has been work- ing with leaders from owner/opera-
tor and industry partner member compa- nies to establish committees focused on each imperative (workforce development, quality improvement, operational excellence, con- sumer choice, and memory care) as well as on senior living public policy. Each committee’s strategic framework
brings forth opportunities and goals; how- ever, no one plan stands alone in achieving a better future for seniors and those who care for them. The plans present a foundation for improving the future of the senior living industry and together will pave a path for overall success as the industry prepares for an aging population and an ever-increasing demand for care and services in the years to come.
Senior Living Leaders Offer Framework for Advancement in Memory Care Through Awareness, Advocacy, and Innovation According to the Alzheimer’s Association, the number of Americans with Alzhei- mer’s disease is growing; now, more than five million Americans are currently living with the disease and it is the sixth leading cause of death in the country. In 2016, the organization assessed that Alzheimer’s and other dementias cost the United States $236 billion. While a critical global issue, it is senior
living providers that will offer care, com- munity, and support to the ever-growing population of those living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. “It is important that the senior living
industry take the initiative to advance tech- nology, services, and research to promote a treatment, cure, and greater quality of life for those affected by dementia,” said

is tasked with enhancing awareness and discovering best practices for the care of senior living residents with dementia by developing strategies to anticipate and respond to memory care issues and trends impacting the industry.
Three guiding principles will drive the
Argentum memory care committee’s strat- egy through 2019: » the
senior living industry must take
action to keep unnecessary federal over- sight at bay in the area of memory care;
» providing excellent care for individuals with dementia should not be restricted to simply meeting state laws; and
» the industry must focus efforts on find- ing practices to enhance care today.
The Argentum memory care committee has outlined several goals in order to assess the success and effectiveness of the strategy to improve the future of memory care across senior living.
