HIGH STANDARD PROFESSIONAL credentials are increasingly important to managers and business owners in today’s highly competitive and growing business environment. As managers and leaders it is often hard to stand out in your field or communicate experience and abilities through resumes and references. As business owners it is increasingly difficult to identify the most qualified candidates among an increasing pool of experienced candidates or to demonstrate to custom- ers the expertise of our leadership. As senior housing and assisted living


have grown over the last 30 years, thousands of very talented, quality leaders have done marvelous work op- erating the individual residences across the nation. Their work has made assisted living the services destination of choice for seniors. Until recently these highly experienced professionals lacked access to a high standard credential identifying their experience and competency. “I applaud efforts to upgrade and standardize re-


quirements for executive certification that will qualify candidates to ascend the corporate ladder and assume important leadership roles in senior living,” said Leon- ard Davis School of Gerontology Professor Dr. George Shannon with the University of Southern California. “As a concerned citizen, with countless friends and rel- atives that are considering senior living communities, I am impressed with the Senior Living Certification Commission’s tireless efforts to set standards of skills and knowledge for executive directors that will assure the safety and well-being of community residents, now and in the future.” In 2014, Argentum embarked on establishing a ground breaking high standard credential for senior living man-

agers and launched the Senior Living Certification Com- mission (SLCC). In May 2015, Argentum and SLCC held the first expert panel related to the development of the Assisted Living Executive Director credential in Tampa, Florida. Over the last year, senior living professionals, including distinguished assisted living executive directors, academicians and other experts have held several meet- ings in which questions for the Assisted Living Executive Director certification examination have been developed, scrutinized and validated. The efforts toward develop- ing the examination and certification for assisted living executive directors will culminate in the first offering of the examination in September. It is truly a historic time, and we look forward to congratulating the first success- ful candidates who fulfill the eligibility requirements and pass the examination as our first certified assisted living executive directors in the nation! “The credential sets our managers apart from com-


petitors and helps residents understand our corporate commitment to the highest quality of service in senior living,” said Merrill Gardens Vice Chairman Bill Pettit Jr.


Certification Matters Voluntary certification takes existing state licensing re- quirements to the next level. It demonstrates to residents, their families, the public, and senior living professionals among others that credentialed executive directors pos- sess the knowledge and skill sets to meet resident needs in today’s increasingly complex operating environment. The SLCC utilized a holistic approach to establish knowl- edge domains and associated job tasks that are tested in the certification examination that include Philosophy of Assisted Living, Resident Care and Services, Customer Experience, Leadership, Operations Management, Reg- ulatory Compliance, Financial Management, and Sales and Marketing.
