A NOTE FROM ARGENTUM

PRESIDENT & CEO James Balda jbalda@argentum.org

Cultivating Culture Within the Heart of Senior Living

“Culture is a word that we seem to be relying on more and more.” That’s according to a statement from the Merriam- Webster editor-at-large in 2014 when ‘culture’ was declared their word of the year. Culture surrounds each of us every day both at home and at work and often provides a sense of value or purpose. Senior living providers know that cultivating a defi ned culture is critical to the engagement of employees and residents alike; that is evident in the organizational missions, visions, and values found throughout the industry.

In this issue of Senior Living Executive, The Culture Issue, you’ll fi nd:

» opportunities for companies and communities to make the most of a mission statement through communication, recognition, and relationships;

» examples of culture-building programs for staff and residents both inside a community and in the greater community;

» best practices for introducing culture at the very beginning of a senior living relationship through customer service; and

» advice from leaders inside and outside the industry working to improve organizational culture and the culture of aging.

2017 Editorial Plan

Issue 1: The Culture Issue Issue 2: The Leadership Issue Issue 3: The Resident Issue Issue 4: The Workforce Issue Issue 5: The Finance Issue Issue 6: The Innovation Issue

For most, the senior living experience occurs at the community level as a resident, an employee, a family member, or a visitor. The community is where we see the “heart of senior living” at its core—where an executive director or administrator knows a resident’s regular breakfast order and grandchildren’s names. A recognition and appreciation of that ‘heart’ will play a major role in forthcoming issues of Senior Living Executive that address the latest in leadership opportunities, resident lifestyle, and fi nancing senior living among other important topics. Special thanks to you for being a loyal Senior Living Executive reader. We hope you enjoy this issue and issues to come in 2017, and we welcome your feedback and suggestions at editor@argentum.org.
