DE RUSSIE…5-STAR Via del Babuino 9 (near Piazza del Popolo)

One of our favorites, this Rocco

Forte property is sleek, sophisticat- ed and expensive, with a very good central city location. Te rooms and marble bathrooms are spacious and elegant. Tere’s a wonderful central, terraced garden where most meals are served during warmer months. It features large contem- porary public rooms, and a restau- rant and bar. A lot of trendy people and celebrities stay here. Tere’s also an indoor pool, spa and sauna, and free Wi-Fi in the public areas and meeting rooms.

GRAND HOTEL DE LA MINERVA…5-STAR Piazza della Minerva 69 A well-appointed five-star hotel

housed in a 17th-century palazzo facing the charming Piazza of the same name, adorned by Ber- nini’s whimsical elephant obelisk. It borders the historic Basilica of

Santa Marta sopra Minerva and is just a stone’s throw from the spec- tacular Pantheon. Te hotel has been refurbished in a style that subtly expresses modern luxury. Te rooms are comfortable and many face the Piazza. Tere’s a lovely rooftop terrace where you can dine, have a cocktail, and enjoy a great view of old Rome. Concierge service is first rate and the staff is very friendly.

HOTEL HASSLER…5-STAR Piazza Trinita dei Monti (at the top of the Spanish Steps)

Very expensive, iconic stately hotel with impeccable service.

Average size rooms and spacious suites. Michelin-star rooftop res- taurant and adjoining bar with spectacular views. Tere’s a won- derful Palm Court garden restau- rant with gelati, too, but not much in the way of recreational facilities. Tere is an extra charge for break- fast and Wi-Fi.

INN AT THE SPANISH STEPS…5-STAR Via Dei Condotti Location, location, location.

Tis small, luxury hotel is perfect for people-watching, especially from the rooftop terrace, where you can dine and drink while looking down on the crowds sit- ting on the Spanish steps, or walking and shopping on Rome’s main shopping drag – Via Dei Condotti. Te standard rooms are on the small side but the suites are roomy; the most expensive of which face the street.

LA POSTA VECCHIA…5-STAR Palo Laziale, Ladispoli (about 45 minutes from downtown Rome on the way to the airport)

If you want to experience how

the very, very rich lived, consider spending at least a night here, at what was once the estate of J. Paul Getty, on your way into or out of Rome. It’s about 45 minutes from downtown on the Tyrrhenian Sea. It’s even worth a trip just for dinner in its vault- ed Michelin-star restaurant and with an extensive (and expen- sive) wine cellar. Tere’s also a private museum on the property for guests; well-preserved ruins;
