efforts, the Swedish Embassy in Tokyo procured a 650kg Flygt pump to help drain the city. The pump, which was flown in from Sweden to Tokyo, was in action just two days later for a successful dewatering operation helmed by a team of Flygt engineers.


And in 1965, when two construction workers became trapped more than 40m below ground after a serious incident during a tunnelling project in the centre of Stockholm, Flygt pumps were deployed to support the rescue mission.


After hours of successful pumping to clear the tunnel of water, large volumes of sand in the tunnel’s shaft began to affect the rescue mission. It became clear that the only option to reach the trapped workers was to return the water to the tunnel and create a sandy sludge which could be pumped out. The Flygt pumps removed nearly 9.5 million litres of sludge water over three days, allowing the construction workers to be successfully rescued.


Sustainable solutions


Fast forward to the 21st century when Flygt solutions were integral to the development of the Beijing Daxing International Airport ‘Green City’ project. The airport is the largest single- structure terminal in the world and required an effective and reliable drainage system that could meet the project’s resiliency and sustainability goals.


Xylem was chosen to provide eight rain-water pump stations on the runways, including 34 sets of Flygt pumps, which had to support fast, efficient drainage during instances of heavy

rain – delays could cause serious economic losses and major inconvenience for travellers. Flygt was the brand of choice because our energy-efficient pumping solutions were a critical requirement for the project. Installed during the construction of the airport in 2019, the reliability of the Flygt pumps proved integral to the effective operation of the drainage system.

New technologies being pioneered by Flygt offer bold new ways to protect and optimise water use as we look ahead. With the water industry using around 4% of the world’s electricity, smart solutions are delivering significant energy efficiencies that are contributing to more sustainable futures. Intelligent, insight driven technology is addressing faulty infrastructure and leaking pipes which can result in between 20 to 30% of the world’s water being lost before it reaches its intended destination.


Flygt continues to push the boundaries with its pioneering approach, having recently unveiled the Flygt Bibo – a breakthrough dewatering pump that reduces energy, wear and tear, and maintenance costs by up to 50%.

The Bibo is set to revolutionise drainage operations and establish the next generation of smart pumps by bringing built-in intelligence to industrial dewatering.


It automatically adapts to its environment and only operates when needed, delivering energy savings of up to 60% compared to traditional dewatering pumps. Its compact design means 30% fewer components and, as instances of snoring and dry running are minimised, operational wear and tear is also lowered by up to 70% - cutting repair and maintenance costs in half.
