Riventa puts Paris Pumping Station on schedule for big savings
At a critical pumping station supplying a major tourist destination near Paris, deployment of Riventa’s proprietary FREEFLOWi4.0™ pump monitoring system and HydraNet software has proved that the rescheduling of pumps to meet optimum performance, provides an immediate saving of 21%.
Commissioned by leading water utility Saur, Riventa’s challenges were to identify a potential reduction in life-cycle costs, as well as show how optimisation of controls and operations would bring about immediate and long-term savings in running costs, including energy efficiency.
Riventa directly assessed the performance of three large and three small variable speed pumps. They discovered that at the pumping station, during certain flow rates, the system operated at up to twice the cost of optimum
operation for significant amounts of time - and was also well in excess of the lowest possible specific power.
Steve Barrett, Managing Director of Riventa, commented: “From the existing total operating cost per year of just over 157,000 Euros, we showed that by optimising the current pumps, we could reduce that to less than 124,000 Euros – but it is the optimization of pump schedules that provides the main benefit. Payback can be achieved in less than 12 months, with the significant improvements in operational performance also extending the lifetime of pumps”.
He added: “Based on all of the pumps being refurbished and operated at optimum configuration, the operating cost would lower even further to just under 113,500
Euros – though it must be said that the units were in good condition and a low priority for refurbishment at the time of the project. This means that capital investment can be focused on other priorities. Assuming a CAPEX of a little over 100,000 Euros, payback would be achieved in three years. This is a classic example of what can be achieved at pumping stations all over the world”.
Bedford Pumps provide North Lynn Pumping Station with fish friendly upgrade
Bedford Pumps Ltd, the UK’s leading manufacturer of high-capacity pumps for land drainage and flood control, has successfully completed the commissioning of two of their fish friendly pumpsets for Kings Lynn Internal Drainage Board at North Lynn Pumping Station.
North Lynn P.S, located in the North West of Kings Lynn near to the East Bank of the River Great Ouse, was built in 1989 and provides water level management to a catchment of approximately 590 hectares. The pumping station had been operating with just one pump which was coming to the end of its service life, but also required additional pumping capacity.
Bedford Pumps manufactured two canister mounted submersible type fish friendly pumps complete with 80 kW motors for North Lynn P.S. One pump and canister were installed as a direct replacement to the existing equipment, and the other into the extra pump bay that was part of the original station design but had remained empty for over 30 years. Bedford Pumps designed the canisters and discharge pipework to fit the scheme. The scope of
26
supply also included the control panels, VFDs, all pipework including modifications to the existing surge tank access, suction splitters, siphon breaker valves, condition monitoring devices, installation, commissioning, and site verification testing.
Bedford Pumps were delighted to work once again with Kings Lynn Internal Drainage Board and consultants Stantec, to provide pumps to North Lynn which each provided a duty of 850 l/s at 5m head, whilst satisfying the eel regulations requirement on site. The pumps, which have been rated as “Excellent” in an independent trial designed to assess their ability to comply with the Eel Regulations, not only offer a safe passage to fish and eels but also provide enhanced life, lower maintenance costs and improved efficiencies, resulting in the lowest total cost of ownership.
Bedford Pumps have been satisfying the market need for Fish Friendly pumps for almost a decade and now have more than 100 operating units operating in virtually every corner of the world.
