Fleet management is another of those terms which when said quickly comes across perhaps as something that whilst not being simple is not too complex an issue.Odd how easy it is to get something that wrong!
There are numerous offerings on the market for software systems that will support fleet maintenance and operations, some of which we will look at later in this article. But perhaps first we should ask what are the fundamentals of fleet management and what should managers of fleets really look out for when selecting their systems. Some of this will depend on how the ‘fleet’ has been acquired and what the terms of that acquisition are.
Perhaps it would be politic to look at what we mean by fleet management to start with. To

most people fleet management simply means looking after a group of vehicles that move stuff around the country from one location to another. More often than not these locations are fixed sites like warehouses or retail outlets.
In the drainage sector however, this is very often not the case. Vehicles and plant from this industry more often than not have to work in various, often remote locations and respond to changing conditions and operational requirements whilst there.

simple transport vehicles to get personnel to site, through inspection vehicles with or without repair equipment to large scale tankers and other liquid ad solid waste transport units.
So, comparing Fleet management in general to fleet management in the drainage sector does not usually provide a good comparison.
With vehicles and plant being required in various locations for different purposes means that tracking is a vital part of the requirement but also knowing what crew is available and trained to undertake he job in hand and what
