Smooth sailing for Gatic as UltraSlot system is installed at Alicante Port

Alicante Port, the well renowned commercial and cruise ship terminal has been upgraded to benefit from a Gatic Slotdrain high- capacity surface water drainage system.

Slotdrain UltraSlot was specified during the re- conditioning of Dock 19 to increase capacity from 300,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) to 463,000 TEU.

“UltraSlot was chosen by specifier SETI, SA, who are well established within the ports sector and who have worked with Gatic products for many years,” said International Sales Manager – Luis Triguero “The engineer in charge was familiar with the mechanical and hydraulic advantages of UltraSlot and requested a competitive price for the project. As Gatic is so well established in the Spanish market, we could exceed their expectations.”

UltraSlot is used in external concrete areas which are subject to constant traffic, such as airports and ports. This high-capacity system is designed to ensure sufficient depth of concrete cover over the main body of the channel to withstand ultra-heavy-duty loads of up to F900 -90 tonnes.

“The biggest challenge we faced was ensuring the system could withstand the consistent, heavy traffic that will always be moving throughout the port,” continues Luis. “However, thanks to its capacity to bear heavy loads, UltraSlot proved to be one of the best drainage options on the market.”

The UltraSlot Channel system was specified for 300 metres and featured stepped fall development. Work on the dock was completed in September 2020.

For almost 30 years, Gatic has specialised in integrated, high-capacity surface water management and over 100 years with Engineered Access Covers. Its surface water drainage systems have been used to capture, control and return run-off into the natural

water cycle on many projects around the world.

The full Gatic range comprises exterior surface water channels, high-capacity channels, linear and slot drainage, and Engineered Access Covers, which are ideal for the most demanding Infrastructure, Industrial and Commercial projects.

Luis concluded: “We have worked with the client across a number of different projects over the years and they are always open to our advice on applying the most beneficial and cost-effective solutions.”

MW Waste notes a 10x turnover rise, thanks in part to Graf UK

Having leading water management specialists Graf UK as its preferred supplier has helped one drainage contractor increase its turnover 10-fold in almost as many years.

General manager ofMWWaste Drainage Support Services Keith Chadwick credits Graf UK with almost a quarter of the company’s current turnover of £2 million, compared to £200,000 in 2007 when he began to rebuild the business for the founder Mark Wareham.

Back then,MWWaste specialised in emptying septic tanks and high-pressure jetting. But within three months of his appointment, Keith had won a contract with Yorkshire Water to move sludge. Then came contracts with Severn Trent Water and working on Aquatrene for the

Ministry of Defence (MoD), looking after the water jetting and drainage for a few hundred military sites.

Back then, Keith admits he knew nothing about water management. His background was as commercial director in the Far East for a replica weaponry company that supplied such blockbuster films as Lord of the Rings and the Blade trilogy.

“I had to learn very quickly,” he said.

At a time when the business was focussed on emptying septic tanks and high-pressure jetting, Keith learned all about wastewater management by reading online, and that’s how he found out about Graf, firstly through the group in Germany, from where he bought
