Therefore the hire option can be seen not just as the back-stop option but as a way of trying out a range of equipment over time to see which bests fits any one company’s operational needs and the usage rate for the equipment across the company’s performance spectrum. Testing the market in this way may lead to a company going out and buying its own equipment or it may show up that the equipment would simply be sat in the yard more often than it is used and therefore not an effective option as an ‘owned’ item.

A broad range of onsite services can also be included in hire agreements, such as installing and commissioning, monitoring and supervision, as well as the repair and maintenance already mentioned.
