WASTEWATER RECYCLING OPTIONS


‘Wastewater Recycling’, said as just two words it sounds like quite a simple option does it not? In reality of course it is not. So what options are there for recycling of wastewater. First perhaps we need to look at where wastewater originates. Again here there are several sources.


The first and probably the most obvious is the generation of foul sewage from domestic and commercial/industrial sources where people live and work. The most usual sources are toilet flushing (with the common unmentionables contained therein), washing water for both humans and clothes/dishes with detergents, fats oils and grease as well as plain old dirt, organic materials etc. There are also sources such as car washing, patio cleaning etc. where the wastewater is often washed down the outside drains of buildings that also take rain water from the roof guttering. Unless the latter is directed into a special surface water drain much of this water can still even today end up in the foul sewer system. Even where the surface water is collected separately there is still the propensity to discharge this, often contaminated (if only mildly contaminated) water directly back into the environment, although this action too is seeing something of a change in attitude.


Within this area of focus there is also a term that is being used for specific wastewater outputs. This is the sector known as Greywater Recycling. This is the


recycling of shower, bath and hand-wash basin water for non-potable water applications (e.g. toilet, washing machine or irrigation) directly without the need for further treatment. This has become of increasing interest to architects, engineers and planners as these systems offer many advantages not least of which is cost saving but can sometimes require the implementation of a secondary piping system with the buildings for which it is used.


Similarly, from the commercial and industrial sites there is usually production of wastewater from production processes, work place cleaning operations etc. which fairly commonly have not just the normal waste materials mention previously but also chemicals used in the production processes and perhaps waste materials from say shavings/trimmings off the products being manufactured or broken materials that have been extracted from the production line as well as cleaning chemicals. Again this is often mixed with water from rainwater drainage systems unless a separate system exists or it ends up in the foul network.
