Hidrostal’s trial pump saves Stapleford from sewage slipup

Hidrostal Ltd, renowned specialist pump suppliers to the water industry, have had great success trialling their pumps at troublesome Anglian Water sites. As a result of this success the trials have now been expanded to different application installs and other regions to compare results based on the type of install as well as the previous data gained. This provides further insight and analysis of the Hidrostal product across its range to fully establish its versatility.

A recent trial opportunity arose at a raw sewage pumping station in the village of Stapleford, Cambridgeshire. The pumping station, which consists of an underground dry well pump chamber, is gravity fed from an adjacent wet well which receives the raw sewage from the surrounding residential area and businesses in the village.

The site was chosen due to a recent unwelcome incident which made the site a priority for review. The existing pumps on the site had become blocked / clogged with rag and were unable to cope with the flow. This resulted in the unfortunate occurrence of flooding of a nearby restaurant’s car park, with raw untreated sewage. The maintenance costs reached almost three times that of the cost of a single pump purchase.

This Hidrostal centrifugal screw impeller pump was chosen for an initial trial to run for a period of 90 days in place of the pump unit which had been unable to cope with the rag laden sewage media. The replacement was retrofitted with minimal

disruption to the existing installation. It was mounted vertically and on a dry mounted duck foot bend which acted as its support as well as the conduit for sewage supply via the wet well. Hidrostal also offered a product variation with the use of an immersible motor which allows the unit to operate completely exposed and in a dry environment, as well as completely submerged should this event occur.

On completion of the 90-day trial the Hidrostal pump did not experience any blockages or call outs for de-ragging. The decision was made to further extend the period of operation over 12 months to give a full and fair comparison over seasonal variations and inflow patterns. In this 12-month period there was not one single call out to de-rag or unblock the Hidrostal pump. The results indicated Hidrostal provided a more reliable, robust pump which is better suited to sites with high rag/solids content and could reduce or eliminate ragging issues.

Hidrostal remain the preferred choice for the replacement of pumps where the reactive maintenance costs are for de-ragging and unblocking.
