Future Water Association Water Dragons final

On 8th March 2018 Future Water Association and The Water Hub came together to host the final of the 2017 heat winners of Water Dragons, which is sponsored by Hydrosave.

The event, held on International Women’s Day, brought together a diverse range of people from across the sector, reflecting different backgrounds and gender. It was a day to celebrate innovation and to challenge current thinking.

Pitches covered leak sensors in commercial properties, neural networks for sewer systems, sustainable disposal of sanitary products, enhanced leak detections across networks and clamp on fittings for pipes. There was a full range of innovations on display with incremental, operational, disruptive and behavioural changes presented. The judges drawn from Anglian Water, Northumbrian Water, Thames Water, Hydrosave and The Water Hub had the unenviable task of trying to pick a winner when everybody was excellent.

Paul Horton, CEO of Future Water Association, explained. “People and innovation are the driving force behind today’s water industry and water dragons is an initiative that brings change into the sector from ideas, products and services. Being at Durham University, on International Women’s Day, with such a diverse audience was the icing on the cake and demonstrated the future face of the water sector’

Dr Sarah Cotterill, Innovation Manager at The Water Hub said “It was a pleasure to be on the judging panel on International Women’s Day, but all five pitches were excellent, so choosing a winner wasn’t easy! The Water Hub will be hosting a 2018 Water Dragons heat later this year, and we can’t wait to see what innovative ideas emerge.”

Alastair Moseley, Chair of Judges added “To see the variety of presentations at the final was amazing. The solutions offered to some of the key challenges were not just fascinating and different, they showed some real creativity of thinking.

Who was the winner? That will be announced on April 12th at the Future Water Association Annual Awards Lunch.
