Summer packages and golf attractive to visting players

S

pring and fall are considered the peak seasons for Pine- hurst area golf. But people in the know have always taken

advantage of summertime golf, which offers better rates, less crowded golf, and conditions that can rival spring and fall. Legacy Golf Links was one of the first courses in the area that made the switch from bent greens to the new heat tolerant ultra-dwarf Bermuda greens. This led to much better green conditions in the heat of the summer when bentgrass struggled to survive, even with constant watering and atten- tion. Now the greens offer much more consistency. Legacy Golf Travel, a golf packaging company formed

out of Legacy GL, offers many options for summer golfers in a host of accommodations, most of them located in the Pine- hurst area across from the main clubhouse of the Pinehurst Resort. Their website, www.LegacyGolfPackage.com even has a link that shows golfers multiple photos of every condo and house available to visiting golfers who book a trip through them. Tobacco Road, another popular facility in the area, also books packages for visiting players. Tobacco Road Golf and Travel has offered discounted packages for many years as one of the leading golf packaging companies in the Pinehurst area. Like Legacy, most of Tobacco Road’s accommodations are in the village of Pinehurst area. Packages can be booked at www.TobaccoRoadTravel.com . Last summer Tobacco Road became yet another area course to make the switch to the ultra-dwarf Bermudagrass greens when it transitioned to the Mini-Verde blend. Like Legacy, the results have been excellent and well received. If playing a Coore & Crenshaw designed masterpiece is on the bucket list then make a point to visit Dormie Club. Origi- nally developed as an exclusive private facility, Dormie opera- tors have allowed limited play from outsiders to experience its award-winning golf course. With summer play a bit slower it’s a great opportunity to make a phone call or check with the packager to see if Dormie can be added to the package. Con- sider it a treat as Dormie was named #2 on Golfweek’s list of “Best Courses You Can Play” in the state of North Carolina. Dormie Club’s website is www.DormieClub.com. Hidden gem is probably an overused term in golf, especially in the Pinehurst area where just about every course is a gem, but if there was a course that fits this description it might be Seven Lakes. Designed by Pinehurst Resort founder James Tufts’s great grandson Peter, it’s long been known by locals to have some of the finest conditioned greens in the area. The golf course, which is located about 10 minutes west of the village of Pinehurst, was purchased in early 2015 and its new owners have already made significant improvements to facili- ties and the golf course. Showing that they want to attract more outside play, Seven
