Legacy G.L. hosted the 2000 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship. Continued from pg. 25
Juniors typically travel with one or both parents and maybe a sibling. Suddenly that figure of 180 turns into close to 500 or more that eat, sleep and shop in the area. As for hosting a major championship, or two in two weeks like Pine- hurst did in 2014, the impact can be monumental in how far it reaches. In March, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory announced that the
back-to-back U.S. Opens at Pinehurst generated more than $140 million in visitor spending and had a statewide economic impact of over $238 million. Those figures blew away the estimates that officials originally calculated. They also proved to officials that not just the Pinehurst area was impacted by the historic golf tournaments. The report said that 26 counties benefitted from spending on lodging, food, beverage, shop- ping, retail, construction, transportation and recreation activities. “Unless someone proves otherwise, this event may have had the big-
gest economic impact in the history of North Carolina,” said Pat Corso in The Pilot. Corso is a former president of Pinehurst Resort and was highly
involved in the process of bringing the first U.S. Open to Pinehurst in 1999. Ironically, Corso, who now is the executive director of the Moore County Partners in Progress, has said that when Pinehurst initially looked into hosting a U.S. Open, it wasn’t about the potential financial windfall for the resort and community. It was more about reposition- ing the resort as one of the premier destinations in golf, along with St. Andrews and Pebble Beach. “The impact was obviously larger than we thought, which is great
news,” added the CVB’s Miles. “To me, it reinforces how big of an event it was, one that could not be conducted without the support of the entire state. People should feel real good about the resort, the county and tourism in North Carolina.”
