Shedd wraps up stellar career at Guilford BY RYAN REDDING

his first three seasons. Career scoring lows of 69 helped propel him to wins at the O’Briant-Jensen Memorial and the Pine Needles Intercollegiate, leading to PING All-South recognition during the 2013-14 season. But Shedd didn’t forget what his parents, Kevin and Susan, taught him – to be a well-rounded person. The senior won back to back conference Scholar-Athlete awards and was twice named to the conference’s Sportsmanship teams. Shedd credits his parents as his greatest influences in life. “They are the hardest working people I know, and they have shown me what great things can happen if you make a plan and work hard,” he said. “They have been my biggest supporters and have believed in me every step of the way.” Like all things in life, with success comes ad-

two criteria in mind. “The first was I wanted to end up somewhere I would get a great education. The second was I wanted to be on a team that would have goals in the postseason,” said Shedd. Enter Guilford College. Located in Greensboro,

NC, the college has an outstanding academic reputa- tion and a championship pedigree. “At Guilford there is one goal every year and that is to win a Na- tional Championship,” said Shedd. The school, an NCAA Division III member, has accumulated three National Championships, the last coming in 2005. Shedd attended Lafayette High School in Wil- liamsburg where he was named the 2011 Bay Rivers District Player of the Year and was an all-state pick by the Virginia Gazette. The golfing honors came and so too did Shedd’s work ethic and attention to academics. “When I was in high school, my parents made sure I knew there was more than just golf in my future,” said Shedd. “They taught me how to be respectful and work hard both in the classroom and on the golf course. I think you can have all the talent in the world when it comes to golf, but if you aren’t well rounded, then you’re only limiting where you can go.” Just as in high school, Shedd earned a number of golfing accolades for the Guilford Quakers in

hen Williamsburg native Nick Shedd was deciding where to play college golf, he had

versity. As he prepared to enter his senior season, Shedd learned his head coach was taking a new op- portunity. “It was difficult when I got the call from Coach Maggard that he would be taking a position with Auburn,” said Shedd. “At first I was worried about what would happen to the program and how we would manage my senior year.” As one of five seniors on the team, Shedd knew they had the required experience and maturity to see them through the transition. “Our Athletic Director, Tom Palombo, did an amazing job on hiring our new coach, Justin Tereshko,” he said.

“Mr. Palombo worked tirelessly to make sure that whatever coaching decision was made, that it would be good not only for our senior season, but for the longevity of the program.” The goals for Shedd’s final season remain the same as when he chose Guilford. “Each of my first three years we have made it to nationals by winning our conference championship, so that would be the first goal, to make it four in a row,” he said. “After that the goal is the same as it has always been at Guilford and that is to win another National Cham- pionship.”

Looking back over his first three seasons, Shedd can appreciate his many accomplishments and memories made, including a spring break team trip to Florida in which he got to play Isleworth Country Club, the former home of Tiger Woods. After school Shedd plans to utilize his degree in Business and Economics to work for a firm in wealth management. For now, he’s content to focus on his final few months of college golf and ce- ment those bonds and relationships that will last a lifetime. “I won’t remember every shot I hit during my col-

lege career,” said Shedd, “but I will remember every one of my teammates and the friendships I have made with them.”
