during construction of East Anglia ONE) to connect in at Bramford. This strategic approach would reduce the level of disruption to the local farming community and residents in the more built up areas along the Preferred Onshore Cable Corridor. Subsequent to these meetings, it was decided that the further projects to benefit from this approach would be East Anglia THREE and East Anglia FOUR.

47.

The five potential corridors that made up the Onshore Area of Search were then assessed from a technical, environmental and cost perspective using a standard matrix approach and a Preferred Onshore Cable Corridor was identified. Scheme specific aerial photography was used to identify a 160m wide corridor. This width constituted both a worst case working width for cable installation (for cables from East Anglia ONE and two further projects) and an area for ecological surveys.

48. Key reasons for selection of the Preferred Onshore Cable Corridor were: 

Local authorities and conservation bodies consulted provided a strong steer that routeing north of Ipswich would be preferable in order to minimise major estuary crossings;

Assuming a landfall at Bawdsey, the environmental preference was to cross the Deben as quickly as possible to route away from the AONB and avoid marshland and bird overwintering areas - it was also preferable to route west of the Deben to Woodbridge given the archaeological relevance of the area to the east (close to Sutton Hoo).

Assuming a route north of Ipswich, a route east of Newbourne was seen as preferable as this was more direct, thereby reducing disruption, and avoiding a SSSI.

 

A route immediately to the south of Woodbridge was the preferred route as this avoided any areas of woodland and County Wildlife Sites.

A route west of Suffolk Water Park was considered preferable to the route to the east as it avoided a potentially contaminated land site (a former fertiliser factory) and a landfill.

49. Due to the distance from the landfall to the converter station at Bramford, the Preferred Onshore Cable Corridor included a number of major routeing constraints, namely the Deben Estuary close to Red House Farm, Martlesham Creek, the East Suffolk Line at Woodbridge, the A12 west of Woodbridge, the A14 north of Ipswich, the River Gipping and the Ipswich to Ely Line north of Ipswich.
