Aspects of the surroundings of a heritage asset in which it is experienced will constitute its setting. This extent is not fixed and may change as the asset and its surroundings evolve. Elements of a setting may make a positive or negative contribution to the significance of an asset, may affect the ability to appreciate that significance or may even be neutral.

The value of heritage assets has been assessed using the Secretary of State’s non- statutory criteria for the selection of monuments for scheduling, as modified by English Heritage, as the basis for the designation of ancient monuments as part of its Monument Protection Plan (MPP). The criteria for archaeological features are:


       


Survival;


Documentation (archaeological); Documentation (historical); Group value (association); Group value (clustering); Diversity (features); Potential; and Amenity value.
