Impact

Table 25.2 Worst Case Assumptions Parameter

Construction

Impact 1: Direct disturbance of buried archaeological remains.

Scenario 1: pre- installed ducts

Laydown area: 300m2 x 61 locations.

A total of 61 jointing pit locations, with up to of 2 kiosks per project at each jointing pit location

16.1km of haul road required to access areas not accessible by public road.

With the exception of new access routes (discussed in section 25.6.2.1.1) this scenario assumes that the majority of the necessary archaeological mitigation has already been undertaken though some further monitoring may be required.

Scenario 2: open trenching for cables

The onshore cable route has a working width of 55m. The onshore electrical transmission works also involve:

 

A total of 48 jointing pit locations, with up to of 2 kiosks per project at each jointing pit location 9 CCS sites

8 HDD locations

The site selection exercise has been undertaken to avoid known sensitive archaeological sites.

There is potential for impacts on unknown sites over the full length of the cable route, though further work to establish the nature and potential of the archaeological resource would be undertaken through the implementation of a WSI. This will enable appropriate strategies to be considered to mitigate and reduce impact.

Where possible and desirable sites will be preserved in situ through: 

 

Adjustment of the cable route through variation within the 75m corridor or Town and Country Planning Act application; Reducing the working width

Protection with geotextile matting or bog mats; and careful reinstatement

Unavoidable archaeological remains identified within the working width, where preservation in situ is not achievable or desirable, will be archaeologically excavated and recorded in advance of construction.

Impact 2: Impacts on historically important hedgerows and the Historic Landscape Character (HLC)

Scenario 1: pre- installed ducts

Direct impacts are anticipated to historic hedgerows where access to jointing pits is required and there may be additional loss along the 16.1km haul road (5.5m wide). Any loss of field boundaries has an impact on the HLC though the re-instatement of lost hedgerows could mitigate this impact.
