Takes into account the desirability of sustaining and enhancing the significance of heritage assets and their setting;
Places weight on the conservation of designated heritage assets; and
Requires developers to record and advance understanding of the significance of any heritage assets to be lost (wholly or in part) in a manner proportionate to their importance and impact, and to make this evidence (and any archive generated) publicly accessible.

Works affecting Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas are subject to the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 while those affecting Scheduled Monuments and Archaeological Areas of Importance must consider the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 (as amended). Additionally certain hedgerows may be deemed to be historically important under the criteria set out in the Hedgerow Regulations 1997, as amended by The Hedgerows (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2002.
