Description


Four small pits containing Grooved Ware pottery, worked flint and some burnt flint were excavated in 1986, following their exposure in gravel workings for the Martlesham By-Pass.


Two annular (circular) trenches, probably representing round buildings were excavated in 1986.


Sherds of Thetford ware, together with medieval pottery found during fieldwalking survey. Further pottery found during watching brief for Martlesham Bypass.


Head stud type enamelled brooch found metal detecting.


Cropmark of SW-NE running trackway. Partly destroyed by Martlesham Bypass


ARTEFACT SCATTER Multi-period Fieldwalking prior to quarrying for Martlesham bypass found prehistoric flintwork as well as some Saxon pottery sherds.

Small bronze Colchester derivative type brooch with three coil spring, found metal detecting.


Bronze crudely decorated strap end & backing `fork' and bronze gilded strap end and gilded strap fastener.


Sestertius, worn, probably Hadrian (AD 117-138) found with a metal detector.


ARTEFACT SCATTER Multi-period Metal detected finds include bronze `annular brooch' or buckle fragment, finds of Roman, Saxon and medieval date.
